The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories from My Life, by John le Carré

“Recounted with the storytelling lan of a master raconteur — by turns dramatic and funny, charming, tart and melancholy.” -Michiko Kakutani,The New York Times

The New York Times bestselling memoir from John le Carr, the legendary author of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy;The Spy Who Came in from the Cold; andThe Night Manager, now an Emmy-nominated television series starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie.

From his years serving in British Intelligence during the Cold War, to a career as a writer that took him from war-torn Cambodia to Beirut on the cusp of the 1982 Israeli invasion to Russia before and after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, le Carrhas always written from the heart of modern times. In this, his first memoir,le Carr is as funny as he is incisive, reading into the events he witnesses the same moral ambiguity with which he imbues his novels. Whether he's writing about the parrot at a Beirut hotel that could perfectly mimic machine gun fire or the opening bars of Beethoven’s Fifth; visiting Rwanda’s museums of the unburied dead in the aftermath of the genocide; celebrating New Year’s Eve 1982 with Yasser Arafat and his high command; interviewing a German woman terrorist in her desert prison in the Negev; listening to the wisdoms of the great physicist, dissident, and Nobel Prize winner Andrei Sakharov; meeting with two former heads of the KGB; watching Alec Guinness prepare for his role as George Smiley in the legendary BBC TV adaptations ofTinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spyand Smiley’s People; or describing the female aid worker who inspired the main character inThe Constant Gardener, le Carr endows each happening with vividness and humor, now making us laugh out loud, now inviting us to think anew about events and people we believed we understood.

Best of all, le Carr gives us a glimpse of a writer’s journey over more than six decades, and his own hunt for the human spark that has given so much life and heart to his fictional characters.

Review
“Recounted with the storytelling lan of a master raconteur — by turns dramatic and funny, charming, tart and melancholy.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“An illuminating, self-effacing and pleasurable inquiry into le Carr’s creative process, offering globe-spanning thrills of a different, but no less captivating kind than those associated with the novels.”—USA Today

“[Le Carr] is a polished raconteur, with an actor’s protean self-presentation, gifts of pace and timing, aptitude for entrances and exits.”—Wall Street Journal

“The name ‘John le Carr’ attracts the audience, but it’s David Cornwell confiding in us here, as if over dinner, then chatting long into the evening over snifters of brandy, or, as he unspools memories of Russia, glasses of vodka.”—Associated Press

"Looking back on a life rich enough to spawn multiple globe-spanning novels...le Carr showcases his grand, cinematic sense of place and...the ineffable quality that defines a professional raconteur....The inviting, drinks-beside-the-fire style from a master of the craft never overtakes the details of le Carr's remarkable life or his strong insider's opinions on issues of geopolitical import since World War II."—Library Journal, starred review

“Always insightful, frequently charming, and sometimes sobering, the memorable tales told by master storyteller le Carr about his life will surely delight both longtime fans and newcomers.”—Publishers Weekly

"For all the cinematic glamour of le Carr's experiences, reflections on the workaday realities offiction writing may provide the most engaging aspect of this colorful valediction. A satisfyingrecollection of a literary life well-lived.”—Kirkus Reviews

Praise for A Delicate Truth

“At the moment a new generation is stumbling upon his work, le Carr is still writing at something close to the top of his game. . . . [He]has not lost his ability to sketch, in a line or two, an entire character.” —Dwight Garner,The New York Times Magazine

“The narrative dominoes fall with masterly precision. . . . As ever, le Carr’s prose is fluid, carrying the reader toward an inevitable yet nail-biting climax.” —Olen Steinhauer,The New York Times Book Review(front page)

“Timelier than ever.” —The New York Times

“Well-wrought . . . A sharply sketched gallery of characters.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Le Carr is fiercely modern. . . . a confluence of styles, voices, approaches . . . A novel that beckons us beyond any and all expectations.”—TheWashington Post

“Gorgeous writing. It’s sophisticated storytelling at its very best.” —USA Today

“Le Carr is...at full power with a book that draws on a career’s worth of literary skill and international analysis. No other writer has charted—pitilessly for politicians but thrillingly for readers—the public and secret histories of his times.” —The Guardian(UK)

will appreciate this amazing collection of vignettes
By M. Suriani
I'm not sure anyone under fifty, even LeCarre fans, will appreciate this amazing collection of vignettes. Two things stand out: first, this man has been a true witness to the makings of modern history and second, his life has been an adventure to match any he describes herein.
While much of his success (in life in general) has been the result of putting a powerful intellect to work in a way that we all benefit, it is also due to his curiosity and willingness to go see for himself, no matter where his current quest may take him. He constantly refers to himself as a novelist and that he is, but he is also a first rate journalist whose historical reportage is nonpareil.
Personally, I found this book answered many of the questions that I would have while reading his novels. Whether inadvertently (doubtful) or intentionally, this book provides many aha! keys to his collected works.
If you like LeCarre, this quick read will make your day!

Disappointing
By Dakotadoc
As a long time fan of Mr. Le Carre, I finished the book felling that, of his personal life, he remains a spy. The only story he tells that intrigued me was about his father, something I'd read a while ago, perhaps in the New Yorker or heard in interviews. I would have loved to have read more about the Nazis in German government after the war, but all I got was a short vignette. Many of the characters he includes in the book are just not interesting. The really interesting ones, he glosses over. My love of his books remains, but of this book of memories, I found it disappointing. Perhaps in a future book, he'll tell us more. That would be the book his readers are still waiting for.

Not quite an autobiography
By Amazon Customer
This is a very interesting book by a novelist who can remember what he wrote and what were the influences that motivated him. I have enjoyed reading and rereading LeCarre's books for half a century. George Smiley is perhaps the most important literary figure of the Cold War. The Spy Who Came In From the Cold was and probably still is the book that exposes the false sense of foreboding that characterizes that era. It was required reading for my daughter's Twentieth Century European literature course at Upenn. This book uncovers some of the events that led to LeCarre creating the best spy fiction ever written. As such, it provides a window into what he was trying to say both in his fiction and in the movies that were based on his books. I recommend it highly.

This book offers new solutions for event architecture, scenography, media installations, interiors, and stage design. Thanks to globalization and digitalization more and more aspects of our business lives and leisure time are taking place on the internet. Consequently, there is more pressure to create the proper setting when we actually do come together. The spaces where we come into face-to-face contact with our target audiences have to be precisely arranged in order to make an impact or to communicate information effectively on an emotional level. That is why so many different creatives are currently working on developing designs in physical space. Staging Space presents an extensive collection of work in which images and space meld seamlessly into a single narrative entity. The spectrum of examples includes exhibition and event architecture, interior design, art installation, and stage design as well as multimedia brand concepts and light projections on city surfaces. The book also features an array of hybrid solutions whose focus lies on using space to achieve pre-defined dramatic effects. The diverse international work collected in Staging Space demonstrates inspirational new applications for aesthetics, information technology, and sales pitches. Because this work crosses boundaries between creative disciplines and defies convention, it gives us the opportunity to appreciate the added value of a well thought-out presentation in physical space. This insight is especially relevant for those working as designers, interior decorators, and set designers, but also for those in advertising and marketing.

Smart solutions for space
By Bazyli Dudek
Wow! I loved this book. Staging Space takes the phenomenon of event-based architecture and blows it up with stellar examples of media installations, museum design, scenography, and stage sets. The creative and inventive solutions presented in the book are sometimes out-of-the-box, but is a vast assortment of typically poppy and attention-grabbing designs meant to double as marketing and advertising solutions. Excellent resource for my own work.

Brilliant overview
By Stephen Rich
Brilliant examples of innovative spaces in interesting spaces. I was looking for a book that would most comprehensively provide an overview of contemporary design within standard contexts, and the stunning phantasmagoria of interior designs -- warped, bold, bizarre -- left me with a whole palate of inspiration.

Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and ...
By Lou Ann Stowell
Freaking amazing! I'm not going to get all flowery and sentimental because Bukowski I don't think would have appreciated it or thought it too trite expressing the elite-est "cuteness".

Bukowski wasn't cute or pretty in his writing...he wrote what he saw around him with an awake and aware in-the-moment presence that is reality. Reality is not pretty or kind. I love his writing for that.

Also I found the words to his dead love in the poems "for Jane: with all the Love I had, Which Was Not Enough:", "Notice", and "for Jane" more touching than anything I have read in a long time. The grief he felt was enormous, world wrecking and I identified with that grief since I lost my husband and soul mate two years ago. I cried on the evening train reading these poems and found myself saying aloud "He KNEW!"

No one that has lost such an integral part of themselves is able to express that sort of gut wrenching of a tribute without having truly loved and suffered greatly.

He made me laugh, think, gasp at the rawness of life I remember seeing living in the outskirts of San Francisco in the 70's. He took down a memory lane of my own childhood and re-examine myself in a way I haven't in a very, very long time.

I never met you, Chuck, but I feel like I knew you, I would buy you a drink at the races if I could. Thank you for being so brutishly honest and more clean in your observations about the world than 80% of the population.

Bukowski clean? Oh, yeah.

He stripped down things to what they actually are instead of what society likes to pretend them to be. That to me is a clean, healthy lungful of fresh air! He was vulgar in his language, but in case you haven't really stepped out of your cubicle or hide-y hole...the world IS vulgar, uncivilized and mean and a vast majority of us in the lower classes (which is damn near anyone under a million anymore) lives with that. We're your elderly on the pensions and social security, waitresses, garbage men, retail sales people, and secretaries. You know, the ones the upper classes can't live without because we are the professional maids and nannies and buttwipers making minimum wage to slightly over, but still in the poverty level that make their world go round. We see the unsanitized and unedited truth. Mother Nature is one cruel mother. Bukowski had the balls to say it!

Thank you again for your humanity and insight.

"I Have Been Alone But Seldom Lonely"
By Foster Corbin
THE PLEASURES OF THE DAMNED is a collection of Charles Bukowski's poems, 548 pages of them, many of them from earlier volumes of poetry, some of them never before published. For anyone familiar with Bukowski, there are few if any surprises here, rather a healthy sampling of this iconoclast's poetry. So very autobiographical, many of these poems are about the things Bukowski loved: the races, cats (you can learn from them), booze, poetry (he calls himself a poetry junkie), Wagner, sex (like Mahler, you do not rush it), some women. He can write a paean to a lover in "The Shower" but then say in another poem that American women, as opposed to Japanese women, "will kill you like they tear a lampshade." He is not reticent in writing about people and things he hates as well: some writers, especially Hemingway, whom he describes as "just a drunk"-- the irony is that in "a clean, well-lighted place," his description of Hemingway's use of his literary reputation to reel women in "one at a time" sounds like Bukowski himself-- critics, mindless work. (He pictures workers trapped in jobs that go nowhere as having "goldfish security.)

Nothing was immune from Bukowski's pen. Apparently he could write about any subject. There are poems here on the killing of elephants in Vietnam, a grammar school bully remembered, the ignorance of youth, a trip to the doctor, picturing himself in a nursing home, a conversation with death, an old car ("a poor man's miracle"), the abuse that both he and his mother suffered at the hands of his father (his mother had "the saddest smile I ever knew"), the homeless, the old, poor, sick and dying, throwing a radio out a window, etc., etc.

No one would say that Bukowski wrote "pretty" poems. On the other hand, we cannot deny that many of them go straight to the bone. In "eating my senior citizen's dinner at the Sizzler" (what a horrendous image) markers in modern cemeteries are "flat on the ground, it's much more pleasant for passing traffic." His world is inhabited by a sixty-five-year-old man with cancer who kills his sixty-six-year-old wife who has Alzheimer's and then kills himself and a house that is sad because it is inhabited with people who have mindless, dead-end jobs. For many of the people Bukowski writes about, "it's a lonely world/of frightened people,/just as it has always/been." On the other hand, in the poem entitled "mind and heart" (p. 523), he acknowledges that we are all alone, "forever alone" but goes on to say that "I have been alone but seldom lonely."

Reading Bukowski reminds you of Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg--although he certainly is not derivative of any other writer-- but a case can be made that he is a lot closer in his mood and world view to some of the darker poems of both Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson than he probably would have acknowledged. There is a place in the parade of poets for anyone who speaks the truth: the Robert Frosts, the Emily Dickinsons, the Donald Halls, the Edwin Arlington Robinsons along with the Charles Bukowskis.

The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge, by David McCullough

FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN ADAMS
First published in 1972, The Great Bridge is the classic account of one of the greatest engineering feats of all time -- the building of the Brooklyn Bridge.
This monumental audiobook which presents extended unabridged passages from the book brings back a heroic vision of the America we once had. It is the enthralling story of one of the greatest events during the Age of Optimism -- a period when Americans were convinced that all great things were possible.
In the years around 1870, the concept of building a great bridge to span the East River between the cities of Manhattan and Brooklyn required a vision and determination comparable to that which went into the building of the pyramids. Throughout the fourteen years of the bridge's construction, the odds against its successful completion seemed staggering. Bodies were crushed and broken, lives were lost, political empires fell, and surges of public emotion constantly threatened the project. But this is not merely the saga of an engineering miracle: it is a sweeping narrative of the heroes and rascals who had a hand in either constructing or obstructing this great enterprise.

Amazon.com Review
In the 19th century, the Brooklyn Bridge was viewed as the greatest engineering feat of mankind. The Roeblings--father and son--toiled for decades, fighting competitors, corrupt politicians, and the laws of nature to fabricate a bridge which, after 100 years, still provides one of the major avenues of access to one of the world's busiest cities--as compared to many bridges built at the same time which collapsed within decades or even years. It is refreshing to read such a magnificent story of real architecture and engineering in an era where these words refer to tiny bits and bytes that inspire awe only in their abstract consequences, and not in their tangible physical magnificence.

From Publishers Weekly
This outstanding audio adaptation brings to life the Herculean struggles behind the creation of one of this country's most recognizable and enduring landmarks. Herrmann's rich, expressive voice perfectly complements McCullough's stately language, and the combination of their talents—coupled with the impressiveness of the engineering marvel that is the Brooklyn Bridge—makes this a compulsive listen. Subtle changes in Herrmann's tone clearly set off quotations without interrupting the flow, and though this audiobook is abridged, the deleted segments are briefly summarized by an unobtrusive second narrator so that listeners never feel as if they're missing part of the story. While there are some descriptions of the 13-year construction process that would have benefited from illustrations, the production as a whole is superb. Listeners cannot help being moved by the grandeur of the structure and by the spectacular risks taken by the men who worked on it, particularly chief engineer Washington Roebling, who remained the driving force behind the bridge despite being crippled by the bends and bedridden for many years. Drama of every kind can be found here: political scandals, intense rivalries, extreme loyalty, a charming love story, heroism, spectacular near-disasters, death, illness and war. Once called the eighth wonder of the world, the Brooklyn Bridge still inspires artists and photographers, tourists and natives alike, and it is the only stone-towered, steel-cabled bridge in the world. In this excellent production, listeners will be inspired anew.

Six Stars! Extremely Lengthy And Detailed May Not Be For Everybody
By FCD117
I completely loved this book. I learned so much. I fancy myself a sort of history buff. Many times when people talk about something of historical significance, I feel internally, that I already know most of what they are talking about. However there are distinct exceptions. When I read books like this I feel like a true amateur! I don't mean that in a bad way whatsoever. David McCullough is really an excellent author.

I took some time to read the most critical reviews. Most of the critical reviews that had any actual content stated the book was too long and too detailed. I can respect that viewpoint. Therefore it is clearly a matter of taste. The reasons that others are critical are the reasons I love this book and others of this nature.

David McCullogh will go into a long relevant digression on a subject that is completely related. In this case he does this about another engineer named Mr. Eads, who built a bridge over the Mississippi at Saint Louis. There are similar digressions about the Civil War, New York politics and corruption, presidential elections, etc... I love all of that.

I have my own method of reading a book like this, but it adds to the costs. I purchased this book on Kindle and also purchased the Audiobook at the same time. When I am commuting, I listen to the audiobook, rather than the radio. I count my commuting time as reading time and I do not get frustrated in traffic. I cannot do this with every audiobook. I can't follow some of them without my full concentration and reading along. But this is an example of an audiobook I can do that with. I also feel it improves both my attention span and listening skills. If there is a word I cannot understand or a section I want to reread, I memorize the section and review it later on Kindle.

In summary this is an extremely lengthy and detailed book. If you really want to get "into the weeds" of history, it is well worth considering. If that will frustrate you, you may want to pass it up. Thank You...

Good book on the construction of a NYC icon
By Trainman95630
I mostly enjoyed this book, especially the first quarter and the last quarter. It is meticulously researched and as always, McCullough does a great job putting you in to the time period he is documenting.

In this case McCullough takes us back to 19th century New York City, comparing and contrasting Manhattan and Brooklyn. He explains the initial impetus for a bridge over the East River to connect the 2 cities, how it would affect the lifestyles and economies of both cities.

The book is covering an exciting time in America when large engineering projects were being accomplished which would lay an infrastructure which made the 20th century economy possible. He covers other bridge builders and their projects notably the Eads bridge over the Mississippi.

As a lot of people know the Roebling family sacrifices made the Brooklyn bridge possible. Mccullough
covers the life of German born Joeseph Roebling an educated engineer who emigrated to Pennsylvania and founded a community of Germans. After about a decade however Roebling went back into engineering and began a series of high profile suspension bridges, notably Roebling bridge in Cincinnati and a railroad bridge over the Niagara river.

When Roebling began work on the Brooklyn bridge his son was his main assistant – Washington Roebling. Unfortunately after his foot was injured in an on the job accident, Joeseph Roebling contracted gangrene and died. His son had to take over as the main engineer for the bridge and he accomplished it by using caissons to sink the foundation of the towers. At that time the medical issues associated with working in pressures greater than one atmosphere were not well understood. Washington Roebling basically sacrificed his life due to his becoming chronically ill from having worked in the caissons and suffering the bends repeatedly. He was bedridden for years, but still managed to manage the project from his home in Brooklyn.

There were some drawbacks to this book, mostly in the middle parts of it. I don't think that the book did a great job of describing the “how to” part of building the bridge. I had seen a special on the history channel on building the bridge. Without that I don't think the book would have made clear what was involved in the caissons and “spinning the wire” . Also the book gets a little bogged down in the politics behind building the bridge, the graft and corruption involved.

Overall though this was a good book to help you understand what went into building a great American landmark.

Like others have stated
By Amazon Customer
Do not buy the Kindle edition! Like others have stated, this book has lengthy, detailed descriptions that are hard to follow even by those with engineering experience. I believe the paper version has diagrams that may bump this book up to a 4-star rating for me. This was my first time reading a David McCullough book, and I appreciated the history of the bridge's construction which was clearly thoroughly researched. I could have done with a little less about the political and social history that was only loosely related to the building of the bridge. Those long, droning chapters could have easily been condensed and made the book much more focused and easier to get through. Overall, an OK read.

By Nancy
I purchased this book for a class. The stories depicted by many different people can be associated by many other different people! An excellent example that all of us people have similarities and we are the same no matter our color, size, shape or where we come from. Although this was a must read for a course it helps to understand that we are all people removed of the way we speak, look or talk! Humans have more in common than not! Should be a must read in time of conflict!

By itzel barillas
Its a book that i had to purchase for my English class. What more is there? But besides that it's a decent book for those who are intrigued in learning about different points of view within the different cultures, races, and environments. Its different stories from people and the struggles or everyday situations that they experience due to their race. Overall its a good book if you enjoy that genre. Otherwise I just purchased it for school.

Waste of $
By Amazon Customer
Pretty lame overall. Mainly its just a bunch of random scales. The author clearly knows his theory but unless you are already a jazz nerd who knows all kinds of theory, this book might as well be written in chinese. I am a blues guitarist who plays a mean groovin bass, and i know all the pentatonic shapes and the minor/major scales....but this book just fell flat. Very boring, in fact boring is an overatatement. No commentary, no "heres a cool lick in _____style"...just one scale after another with zero applications. I wouldnt have bought this book except for all the people who gave it great reviews....thanks alot. If you gave this book a good review then either you cannot play bass at all or you are on the level of charles mingus, theory-wise. Total piece of crap book. Has a cool cover though, i guess.

A very good resource for five string bass
By Weaving
I bought this book because I was looking for something similar to the "Bass Grimoire" that covered five string bass. While this book is not exactly the same as the aforementioned Grimoire, it is still very useful. I really like the neck diagrams for the scales, in particular the "vertical" patterns. The vertical patterns give you nice 4 note per string patterns that you can run up and down the neck, as opposed to the more traditional "horizontal" approach to practicing scales (which is also included in the book's examples, by the way). This is one area where this book actually has the edge on the Bass Grimoire. Another area is the scale notation. The scales are shown in standard notation, neck diagrams, as well as tab. Having these three different types of notation shown for each scale example really helped me wrap my brain around these long patterns.

As far as flaws go, there aren't many. The book only has the scale examples in the keys of B and C, and it is not nearly as complete a thesaurus of scales as the Grimoire is. For example, it has nothing more exotic than the Harmonic Minor scale, which isn't particularly exotic at all. What I would really love to see is a hybrid of the two books, something where the scales are shown in all three notation manners (tab, standard, fretboard diagram), as many known scales as possible are included, all scale examples are shown in all keys, and of course, it is transcribed for five string bass. This would be a thick and expensive book, but it would be one I would definitely buy. Maybe Mr. Emmel should contact the elusive Adam Kadmon about a collaboration (and please let Mr. Kadmon be in charge of cover design)!

In all, I recommend this book if you are looking for a good tool for practicing scales on five string bass. Hopefully more scale books for five string bass will be released in the future, because this is a useful resource and we need more like it.

I have no idea where you get off thinking you ...
By Lawrence
I have no idea where you get off thinking you can sell this book! I don't know who you are. Maybe you pledged days, nights, weeks, months of your life to get it and maybe you just found it because a careless brother lost it. But to sell it is downright disrespectful. If you have any dignity, I
humbly ask you take this down.

Thank you.

Overall a great book
By R. Foster
I've read this book for my grad school class. It's good with the basic concepts of learning theories, and how adults are different then children. It will become outdated though as the millennial get older since it limits reliability on technology.

A worthy translation of a good book
By Heikki Hietala
Maria K has taken up the task of translating lesser-known, but nevertheless good books into English. This is a commendable project, for we get to enjoy books that would lie below the radar otherwise.

This little gem is a story in the classic Russian vein. Rich in narrative, with colorful language full of visual and even scent cues, we are taken on a journey to the edge of darkness. Tsvet is a simple person, with a good heart and a sense for his place in society, who is offered the world on a plate. His moral integrity enables him to stay on the safe side even if he takes a glimpse of what could be, but aware of the price of what he sees, he does the right thing.

If you would like an entry point into the Russian masters of storytelling, this book is it. You will be amazed by the breadth of the narrative, whicn Maria K has rendered into flowing and eloquent English prose. As a story this is also a part of the grand corpus of devil tales, and as such, a good one indeed.

As an author of speculative fiction myself, I will read this again later and try to learn Kuprin's knack for weaving a rich tale without once boring the reader.
