Assessment & Instruction of reading and writing difficulties.
By Cyndy
I was fortunate enough to have Marge Lipson as my advisor at UVM. Her knowledge and ability in the field of literacy is expansive and she shares it with everyone through this text book. This is a must have for any educator who helps students with any aspect of literacy. It is a true guide how to assess students, what to look for, and how to interpret and use the results for instructing. The newest edition is the best yet!Assessment & Instruction of Reading and Writing Difficulties: An Interactive Approach (4th Edition)

TOO Much and TOO Dry
By MeaMagaro
ugh! this text is too wordy! It is easily the size of two or three text books, very small print, and overly dry. I have found several other assessment and instruction texts that have been more valuable.

Review
"Zaloom's superb book is a double-site ethnography [that shows how] the appearance of chaos hid a complex social order, which Zaloom delineates beautifully." - London Review of Books "The book is half fascinating cultural portrait and half in-depth academic text.... What emerges from the mix is a nuanced, bottom-up picture of Chicago's economic importance in the world market, and how our city's working-class swagger has shaped derivatives trading from the inception of the market." - Time Out Chicago"

About the Author

It's Time to Evolve
By takingadayoff
The pit trader postures and screams to establish dominance. He uses physical and psychological intimidation to scare off potential competitors. A certain amount of cooperation and even trust is necessary for him to be successful. It's surprising that Jane Goodall hasn't seen fit to study these young primates.

Caitlin Zaloom, a cultural anthropologist, lived among the savages at the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) and the London International Financial Futures Exchange (LIFFE) for several years, long enough for them to become accustomed to her presence and even, to a point, trust her or at least ignore her. A woman in the trading pit is about as rare as a human living among the gorillas.

There are some pretty compelling reasons to study the trading pits. They are disappearing and soon most trading will be done electronically from all over the world. Traders won't be in the same room with each other and shouting will get you nowhere. How will this change trading? Obviously a loud voice will no longer give a trader an advantage, but will being an alpha male still be a plus?

Zaloom looks at the traditions of traders, the architecture of the trading space, the traders' clothing and habits, how traders get their jobs and how they're trained. She learned the techniques of traders and she became a trader. It's a short book (177 pages of text plus excellent and detailed notes, bibliography, index, and photos), but it covers a lot of territory. The style is often academic, with references to Michel Foucault, for instance, but on the other hand, these are pit traders we're talking about, so you'll have to pardon their French. Zaloom describes an especially colorful London trader, Freddy, who wears khakis with holes in them that show his underwear. He picks his nose, flashes the pit, and sings and barks loudly. It's hard to imagine how the markets will survive without him.

By Sonam Ukyab
This is an academic study to the Futures markets and an essential collective for traders from all backgrounds. Unlike books that instruct you what to do in the markets, Ms. Zaloom takes a detached view of the professional traders she interviews and spends time with and this is a valuable perspective that one does not usually get. Chapter Six: The Discipline of the Speculator alone is worth the price of owning and reading and rereading this book. I own and have read countless books on trading, the 2 books by Mark Douglas and this one is what I keep perusing over time.

Interesting book, well written. Covers trading from an integrated point of view about how technology, money and other events interconnect. Gives trading a human touch. Glad I have the book.

Not even close to all you need to know.
By M. E. Volmar
This is an altogether poor how to draw book that leaves a lot to be desired. Its meager introduction only contains a very haphazard list of materials without specifications or descriptions, followed by the most unhelpful step-by-step layout I have ever seen on a how to draw book. On the left pages it has a full-page color drawing of one Justice League superhero with a short history of the character. On the opposite page there are four progressive drawings on graph paper on how to obtain that finished image, as in copying the same previously presented image and not being able to create your own. There are NO instructions on how to go from one step to the other, and NO discussion of guidelines on basic figure drawing, head and figure proportions, movements or expressions, comparisons of male and female figure features, or perspective and foreshortening for backgrounds and figures, all of them essential issues to any serious cartoonist. It also lacks instructions on compositional drawings, i.e., drawings showing two or more superheroes interacting with backgrounds.
This 32-page book also contains a 2-page presentation, a 1-page introduction, a 1-page conclusion, and 4 sheets (8 pages) of graph paper in the back, leaving you with only 20 pages (10 images) of superhero drawings, that is: 2 for Superman, 2 for Batman, 2 for Wonder Woman and one each for Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Flash and Hawkgirl.
I would recommend buying any of the three Ty Templeton books on cartooning the DC comics universe first: How to Draw Batman, How To Draw Superman or How to Draw Batman and Other DC Comics Superheroes, to get your money's worth of everything missing from this book. Or, if you are desperate to draw the Justice League like Bruce Timm, try downloading some images from the Internet and practice copying them on graph paper, you'll probably do just as well or a lot better than by buying this book.
This book is aimed for a 9 to 12 years-old audience, but even they will find the lack of instruction in this book frustrating, what it lacks in depth, it doesn't compensate in price or print quality.

The Justice League world of art
By A Customer
In "How to draw Justice League" there are step-by-step guides that take you through the process of drawing all seven of your favorite Justice League characters. On the left side of each four step guide there is a colorful picture of what your drawing should look like when it's finished and on the top of the page is the character's name in cool Justice League writing. When you buy this book you're welcomed into the Justice League world of art.

Review
Summer 2015 Following the success of her previous book, Atmospheric Watercolours, Jean Haines second book brings us her world of watercolour. In the introduction Jean describes how she wants the book to read as an adventure 'an incredible exploration of the world of watercolour'. Rather than simply showing you how to paint in watercolour step by step (which of course she does do) she intednds to motiv ate a reaction in you to look around you and capture that response in the medium of watercolour. Opening chapters deal with materials - with some demonstrations along the way, before moving on to colour and texture, building your confidence then putting it all together to create more complex work. Detailed step by step demonstrations follow, including painting a cat, portraits, landscapes and cityscapes. There are plenty of tips and motivational exercises to keep you inspired on your journey * Leisure Painter, The * July 2015 Having got all 3 of Jean's books and reviewed Atmospheric Watercolours I took a different approach with this one, savouring it (I tried to savour the others too but excitement made me gulp them down as quickly as possible, not always the best way though they are books to revisit time and time again!!) taking my time and enjoying every word, paragraph and chapter. It isn't easy to paint in a loose way and even harder to teach it and once again Jean does a truly fabulous job of bringing her style of painting to the masses!! The illustrations are simply beautiful, full of life and colour and in fact this book concentrates very much on colour describing Jean's own perspective and view of how we should be excited and inspired by all the colours available in today's market. Music to my ears as I also love colour so am obviously in very good company!! To see this review and blog in full visit... http://judithfarnworthart.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/book-review-of-jean-haines-world-of.html * judithfarnworthart.blogspot.co.uk * May 2015 Well, this one has a brave title! It takes the gamble that you known who Jean Haines is, as there's no other clue to the content,. But then, you probably do. Jean has established a reputation in the last few years as one of the most charismatic exponents of loose watercolour. Her ability to convey not just the look but the feel of a subject with just a few washes and well chosen colours has gained her many fans. And, in truth, this isn't a book you can pin down in any other way. This isn't exactly a how-to manual, although there are plenty of exercises, demonstrations, hints and tips, but more of a guide to what waterclour can do if you give its head. It's quite a wild ride a lot of the time, but also an exhilarating one. This is one of those books which is hard to describe as it's really something you have to experience yourself. However, if you're a fan of Jean's work, or you like the idea of loose watercolours and want to explore further with a little guidance, this is one for you. There's a sense of dynamism, presence and movement throughout that's a bit like walking on a tightrope. As long as you don't think too hard or look down it will be OK. Jean manages it with aplomb and she'll help you get there too. * Paint * May 2015 In this beautiful inspiring book, Jean Haines takes you on an exciting journey through her world of water-colour painting. She provides practical advice and guidance for artists of all abilities using clearly written text, step-by-step studies and numerous examples of her work, all delivered with the same passion and her enthusiasm that characterise her painting and her life. * Craft Business * Issue 111 Jean Haines is most at home with natural subjects - animals, birds, flowers and plants, though people, landscapes and buildings find their way into her work as well. The word 'atmospheric' could have been coined for her style of painting, which is less representational than impressionistic. Jean has one of the loosest styles around and she's not one for minute detail, so the viewer has to be guided to what they're seeing, rather than shown. It's something that comes with confidence and she is excellent at showing you how she works and how you can achieve the same effects. By just hinting at forms and shapes, Jean brings an incredible sense of presence and movement to her paintings - those people are too busy going about their daily business to stop and be painted, that kingfisher is going to fly off that branch in a flash any second. It's a tour de force of the properties of colour and water combined and an amazing and captivating ride all the way. * SAA * May 2015 Jean Haines' luminous, light infused watercolors are a looser, freer style of painting influenced by Chinese brushwork. Try your hand at this style with this accessible book on watercolor painting. The first part of the book charts her change from botanical art to landscapes and beyond, and her views on choosing colors and other art materials. This book does not merely tell you what you ought to buy but explains why the artist uses these things and how she does it, making it a very personal look at watercolor painting. Then follow lessons on brushwork taught through a variety of short paintings and a "watercolor workout", a "color gym" with warm up exercises and more to get you into the mood. These are described in this way to show how to paint in this style, with lots of washes and loose, dreamy textures and images. What then follows is not just a section of isolated projects but an in-depth look at how Ms Haines approaches each one, complete with steps so you can have a go too. It is certainly an innovative way of working, often using unconventional items like string and plastic to get the right look. Each project however small is packed with useful tips, and anybody having a try is sure to start looking at watercolors in a whole new way. This is a very personal and innovative look at painting which manages to not only convey how the artist does it but teach it as well. * Myshelf.com * August 2015 A book that relies totally on the author's name for a hint of the content is either brave or supremely sure of itself. In this case Jean Haines is so well known for her loose atmospheric watercolours that the risk is worth it. This is a book that knows exactly what it's about by an artist who is an absolute master of her medium and technique. Jean explores every corner of water and of colour. She uses the very loosest of washes, rarely depicts detail, instead suggesting it subtly and confidently. The viewer is led towards, what they should see rather than merely shown it. If you love loose, impressionistic watercolour this is an absolute treat. * Artist, The *

About the Author
A member of the Society for Women Artists (SWA), international watercolourist Jean Haines is well known for her love of her chosen medium. Having lived and traveled in many countries, this popular artist has had the opportunity to develop her skills whilst under the influence of masters from many countries, including Asia, the Middle East and Europe. She studied brush control while living in China and this had the greatest impact on her style. Later, when working with artists from India and Pakistan, she became inspired by the vibrant colors they used. The combination of East meets West in Jean’s style is to be enjoyed. The magical free flow of water and color straight on to a blank working surface (with no initial drawing) creates amazing results, often leaving her audience breathless with delight. Her paintings can be found in homes all over the world and in 2009 she won the Anthony J Lester Award during the SWA Annual Exhibition, where her work was likened to Joseph Crawhalls of the famous Glasgow Boys group of artists. She regularly writes for art magazines and exhibits in a number of galleries. Her hugely successful workshops are held regularly in the UK, and her 2014 Australia Book Signing and Workshop Tour is already sold out. In 2015 she will be visiting California, New York and St Louis in the USA for an exciting new book launch and book signing tour. Jean lives in Crookham Village, Hampshire.

I'm sure it's a great book, but it's completely unreadable.
By S Joyce
I read the reviews saying that the eBook was formatted strangely, but underestimated just how strange. Every page except for the cover is sideways and narrowed, making the eBook unreadable-- even changing the orientation of the device doesn't help, and seems to make it worse. I uploaded two screenshots here of what the book looks like at portrait orientation and landscape for a comparison.
I called customer service, who shared the screen on my Kindle and confirmed that the book isn't formatted correctly. For this price (for a download!) it should be. Customer service is alerting the publisher, who should fix it in a few business days (maybe, but if they actually cared they'd have checked the format before offering it for sale), but I accepted a refund and returned the purchase.
For now, buyer beware. Rating for the publisher- zero stars. Rating for the customer service representative- all of the stars, she was great.

New ideas for Watercolor World
By J.Jay
Jean Haines has a fantastic approach and methodology to working in watercolor. It is a very loose style of developing an image. There are lessons, demonstrations and practices in using washes in watercolor. The illustrations are helpful to follow in developing her technique. It has much more interesting images than tighter methods of watercolor. It is worth the price.

The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, by Iain McGilchrist

Why is the brain divided? The difference between right and left hemispheres has been puzzled over for centuries. In a book of unprecedented scope, Iain McGilchrist draws on a vast body of recent brain research, illustrated with case histories, to reveal that the difference is profound—not just this or that function, but two whole, coherent, but incompatible ways of experiencing the world. The left hemisphere is detail oriented, prefers mechanisms to living things, and is inclined to self-interest, where the right hemisphere has greater breadth, flexibility, and generosity. This division helps explain the origins of music and language, and casts new light on the history of philosophy, as well as on some mental illnesses.

In the second part of the book, McGilchrist takes the reader on a journey through the history of Western culture, illustrating the tension between these two worlds as revealed in the thought and belief of thinkers and artists, from Aeschylus to Magritte. He argues that, despite its inferior grasp of reality, the left hemisphere is increasingly taking precedence in the modern world, with potentially disastrous consequences. This is truly a tour de force that should excite interest in a wide readership. (20091126)

From Publishers Weekly
A U.K. mental health consultant and clinical director with a background in literature, McGilchrist attempts to synthesize his two areas of expertise, arguing that the "divided and asymmetrical nature" of the human brain is reflected in the history of Western culture. Part I, The Divided Brain, lays the groundwork for his thesis, examining two lobes' significantly different features (structure, sensitivity to hormones, etc.) and separate functions (the left hemisphere is concerned with "what," the right with "how"). He suggests that music, "ultimately... the communication of emotion," is the "ancestor of language," arising largely in the right hemisphere while "the culture of the written word tends inevitably toward the predominantly left hemisphere." More controversially, McGilchrist argues that "there is no such thing as the brain" as such, only the brain as we perceive it; this leads him to conclude that different periods of Western civilization (from the Homeric epoch to the present), one or the other hemisphere has predominated, defining "consistent ways of being that persist" through time. This densely argued book is aimed at an academic crowd, is notable for its sweep but a stretch in terms of a uniting thesis.

A masterful work
By gypsy
I agree with all the previous reviews of this remarkable book. As I was reading, I kept track of the specific elements of each of the hemispheres that McGilchrist cites in this well researched book. I thought I would share this with the readers:
A very partial summary of the nature of the left hemisphere could be as follows: it has an emphasis on doing, on things mechanistic, of the "whatness" of things; it is interested purely in functions and can only see things in context. The LH is not interested in living things. It does not understand metaphor and deals with pieces of information but cannot see the gestalt of situations. It recognizes the familiar and is not the hemisphere that attends to the "new", therefore it searches for what it already understands to categorize and nail down, often with (another of its characteristics) an unreasonable certainty of itself. Remember, it can't observe anything outside of its own confines. Since it prefers the known, it attempts to repackage new information (if unaided by the RH) as familiar - a kind of re-presenting the experience. It positively prefers (and defends!) what it knows! The LH tends to deny discrepancies that do not fit its already generated schema of things. It creates "a sort of self-reflexive virtual world" according to McGilchrist. Additionally, it is "regional" and focuses narrowly. The metaphor for its structure is vertical. It brings an attention that isolates, fixes and makes things explicit by bringing it under the spotlight of attention. It helps us to be grounded and "in life", looks for repetition and commonality between things without which we would drift and be unable to understand our experiences since all would be continuously new. It is efficient in routine situations where things are predictable. Without benefit of the RH (seen in studies of people with hemispheric damage, for example), it also renders things inert, mechanical and lifeless.. But it allows us to "know" and learn and make things.

The right hemisphere's emphasis is on process, on the "how", "the manner in which" or the "howness" as McGilchrist puts it. It is interested in "ways of being" which only living things have. I was amazed to learn that the RH does recognize one group of inanimate objects as belonging to the class of living entities, and that is musical instruments (!) It helps us resonate with other living beings and the natural world, seeing its ultimate interconnectedness. The RH can carefully see things out of their context, it is global rather than regional, is broad and flexible, and as mentioned above, understands metaphor. It sees the gestalt and the wholeness; it tolerates ambiguity and the unknown. Its structure metaphor is "horizontal"; it is spacious and helps us with enough distance so we can observe. In it, we experience the live, complex, embodied, world of individual, always unique beings, forever in flux, a net of interdependencies, forming and reforming wholes, a world with which we are deeply connected. The RH is responsible for every kind of attention: divided, vigilant, sustained, and alertness - except for "focused", the domain of the LH. It can direct attention to what comes to us "from the edges" of our awareness regardless of the hemisphere side. It alone detects new or novel experiences. It distinguishes old information from new better than the LH. Animals, like horses, perceive new and emotionally arousing stimuli with the left eye (which is governed by the RH). It is more capable of a frame shift; think "possibility"; it has flexibility when encountering the "new" and suppresses the immediate impulse to see it as "old". It actively watches for discrepancies, more like a "devil's advocate". It approaches certainty with caution and humility. It says "I wonder" or "it might be" when confronted with information. But it also, without the LH, would create an experience that was always unique, forever in motion and unpredictable. `'If all things flow, and there is never a repeated experience, then we can never step into the same river twice, and we would never be able to `know' anything." If nothing can ever be repeated, then nothing can be known.

Is the result of this growing LH dominance over the RH an increasingly dehumanized society where mechanism, bureaucracy, obsession with structure and with "what" predominates over a concern for living things and beings and their interconnectedness? You will be immersed in this question throughout this remarkable book.

While no doubt this book deepens our understanding of the brain and has vast implications for psychotherapy and the understanding of human psychology, it is far more than this. It isn't possible to read this book without a continuing awareness of our political system, the growing dominance of our corporations, the weak assumptions of war, and the uncomfortably growing sense of the "dehumanization" of our world.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS OF OUR AGE
By Michael Tsarion
This is certainly a masterly magnum opus on human reality, the brain, consciousness and related philosophical and psychological matters.

The reviewers who complain that the style is foreboding and dense must be unfamiliar with the pompous impenetrability of most scientific tomes, particularly of the past. McGilchrist writes in plain, easy to understand prose, which is one of the refreshingly positive qualities of this wonderful book.

My only criticism is that McGilchrist pays only fleeting regard to sages such William Blake, and avoids mention altogether of mega-philosophers such as Berkeley and Friedrich Schelling, from whom he gets many of his deeper ideas.

This is not uncommon among academics of this standing, who are rather desperate to "borrow" the ideas of greater historical savants in their quest to salvage and expand the dreadfully narrow, anemic materialist paradigms that have, for many decades now, been crumbling under their own weight.

Consequently, the extraordinary ideas of the world's foremost thinkers - Blake, Bohme, Eckhart, Malebranche, Berkeley, Goethe, Schelling, Hegel, Whitehead, and many others, are repackaged and recycled without due credit time and again. This is a particularly conspicuous oversight in scientific circles where the arrogance of writers and thinkers is on steroids.

McGilchrist and academics of his type, and their publishers, know how few readers have a clue about where their ideas come from. So the habit of recent years is to flagrantly airbrush out the name of an original intelligence from the canvas and scrawl your own signature in its place. Job done. Publishers happy. No one will notice or get bothered about it.

Most western academia is based on the plagiarized work of the great sages, some of whom i mention here, but many others besides. This work is no exception. You get the feeling that editors and publishers have methodically gone through this work and deliberately excised any reference to any great mind that McGilchrist himself might have wished to reference. This gives the book the "scientific" gleam they desire, since after all it's duped materialists they hope will read this work. So keep the blindfolds on, and just open the mouth and taste what goodies are placed on the tongue. Don't bother worrying about who cooked these delicacies in the first place before your time. The champions of scientism and materialism prefer you never find out about that.

In light of this, I suggest that interested parties read the trilogy by Arthur Koestler: "Sleepwalkers," "Ghost in the Machine" and "Act of Creation." These books help us remember that for every apparently "new" theory proffered forth by some trophy-obsessed newbie, there is a mastermind in the wings whose name gets more and more forgotten as time passes.

On a positive note, McG does well to brilliantly and concisely detail the ideas of the Phenomenologists Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. McG has noticed how well their ideas on Being, perception and somatic intelligence dovetail with his own findings on the hemispheres of the brain and their asymmetrical relationship. This unison of ideas is one of the strongest aspects of this book.

I also suggest the works of Rupert Sheldrake, Anthony Peake, Margaret Midgley, Christopher Davis, and others mentioned on the Library page of my site Schellingzone.com

An amazing journey. Nietzsche reborn as a neuroscientist
By sully
I give this book 5 stars because it is utterly engrossing, well argued, expansively researched and I could not put it down. There is cutting edge neuroscience, vast historical, artistic, philosophical and literary discussions. An enormous argument based on the neuroscience of the right and left brain hemispheres and their effects on Western history and its development. There are ideas and concepts I learned which I most likely never would have been exposed to.I will conclude this part of my review with a hearty recommendation for reading this book and I say that you open your mind and go on the journey. There is time for thinking about it afterwards.
Though I give this book 5 stars, it does not mean I have no reactions.
McGilchrist is tireless with his argument of the left hemisphere dominating the right to such an extent that you feel exhausted by the end of the book. He makes it clear that he desires a balance of the two hemispheres, yet you can loose that point during his arguments. I do wish he had discussed more the dangers of right hemisphere dominance. Indeed, The Renaissance's open minded worldliness led down some murderous pathways.
Nietzsche is quoted many times to support his arguments of Western Civilization's dominance by left hemisphere rationality and abstract thinking and indeed the critique is very much in line with Nietzsche's views. McGilchrist and Nietzsche both see Western civilization going off the rails because of Plato and only going back on the rails with the Renaissance and then going back off with the Reformation and Enlightenment. Nietzsche's condemnation of other- worldly rationality is given a specific place in the brain-the left hemisphere. Those Platonic Forms and the argument that truth is only found through rationality, McGilchrist says is the left hemisphere's poison which rolls through Western history. A stunning neuroscientific backing of Nietzsche. Yet, Nietzsche's philosophical overview can break down in the cold objective view of hemispheric brain science and actual history. McGilchrist's hammering of the nasty left hemisphere's dominance of history, sounds like McGilchrist's own left hemisphere going off the rails. I think Nietzsche would have told him to calm down a bit, and that is saying a lot, indeed.
McGilchrist's view on religion is fascinating. He understandably leaves out Nietzsche's complete condemnation of all things Christian and wades in. The Protestants are condemned as destroying the Renaissance,(Nietzsche agrees) by bringing back a rational word based left hemisphere religion which assaults the intuitive and metaphorical Catholics. The Catholic church can be comforted that McGilchrist says they are more right hemisphere based than the fundamentalist Protestants who are left hemisphere based, yet will priests find comfort looking out at a flock who are there to buff up their right hemispheres'? The idea that Catholicism is good for brain hemisphere balance is interesting but may not be taken up by the Vatican just yet.
There are more things to say, but as Nietzsche wrote:"Follow you, not me". Read this amazing book and think your own thoughts.

Guide to the Vascular Plants of the Blue Ridge, by B. Eugene Wofford

The mountainous Blue Ridge, perhaps the most botanically diverse region in the eastern United States, extends for more than five hundred miles, the bulk of the area falling within eighty-five counties of five states: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. The area has attracted the attention of botanists for nearly two centuries, yet no comprehensive work has previously been available that catalogs its rich floristic abundance.

Addressing the needs of professional and amateur botanists interested in the Blue Ridge, B. Eugene Wofford’s guide makes it possible to identify all the region’s native and naturalized plant life--representing 161 families, 726 genera, and 2,391 species and lesser taxa. Among the flora to be found in the Blue Ridge are a number of species that have been identified as rare or endangered. The volume contains an introduction instructing readers on the use of the guide; a glossary of terms with selected illustrations; a map of the region; a key to the major plant groups; and keys to the Pteridophyte, Gymnosperm, Monocot, and Dicot families as well as to genera, species and lesser taxa. The species and lesser taxa enumeration following each genus contains the scientific name, common name or names, general habitat preferences, frequency and area of occurrence, flowering or sporulating periods, and pertinent taxonomic and nonmenclatural synonyms.

The keys for identification rely primarily on easily identified flowering or sporulating material and can be interpreted by all users, from beginners and amateurs to experienced professionals.

Good technical key
By A Customer
This is an excellent key for trained botanists (or very knowledgable amateurs) who want to identify the flora of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the southeast United States. However, it is not a book for the untrained, casual observer of wildflowers. The dichotomous key is easy to follow, though I wished the habitat descriptions were more detailed. The lack of illustrations is distressing -- sometimes a picture IS worth a thousand words! However, I appreciate that illustrations are expensive and would have increased the size of the book. It is easily carried in the field -- always a plus.

Great taxonomic key
By Amazon Customer
I used this key in college for two botany classes (a plant diversity class and a plant anatomy and physiology class). It is an excellent tool for identifying plants, but, as the other two reviews noted, it is probably not something you're going to use while walking through the woods as a casual plant-lover. There are no illustrations, and most of the keys require a good dissecting microscope or at least a hand lense to really get a good look at the anatomy of the plant. I would also recommend purchasing a good dictionary of plant terminology to use in conjunction with this. However, if you're looking for an excellent book of dichotomous keys for plants over much of the southeastern U.S., I don't know that there is a better one out there.

Excellent regional reference for vascular flora.
By Marc
I'm in the Appalachian Mountains, up around northwest North Carolina. Thus far I've yet to find ANY endemic species not in this book. Provided you understand phylogenetic trees (it's a system for figuring out what you're looking at) and have a decent reference for scientist speak you've got the definitive guide.

This is not, however, a field guide. This is a very detailed scientific guide, there are several good field guides out there. If you are unfamiliar with scientific terminology regarding botany look into getting a book on plant taxonomy to go with it, the author Zack E. Murrell has one named 'Vascular Plant Taxonomy'.
