Oracle complete reference

Generally the book is well written , but the approach is for very highly technical individuals. Since I am primary a SQL programmer, about half the book is not what I need. However, I use this book on PL/SQL more than I use the book "Oracle PL/SQL Programming". I found this book is better organized to check syntax on various functions. My DBA is usually checking the book for her job and she has found the book to be helpful for her needs. Overall I would recommend the book as a group reference.

Expensive Paperweight

If you have no internet access, this book is better than nothing, but otherwise stick with the free online books and docs provided by Oracle. Indeed, the last 1/3 or so of this book is just reference material copied directly from Oracle's free docs, but is more difficult to navigate without the hyperlinked crossreferences.

The book is not "complete" as the title suggests, not covering all new features (case-insensitivity using NLS_SORT, NLS_COMP is just one example).

Additionally, not all the information is accurate -- the author does not even know what the term "relational database" means, he thinks "relations" have something to do with foreign keys. A common misconception yes, but worrisome from a database "expert". I also found incorrect syntax in the transportable tablespace section, before I gave up with the book entirely.

Use at your own risk, and consider that the author has given his own book a 5 star rating on this site!

Great reference

I have been using this book or one of its earlier versions for six years. It does a great job of filling in the blanks for people like me who learned Oracle in the monkey-see monkey-do fashion of on the job training. It continues to be a great reference because it has a great index -- probably the best index in any technical book I own. I can find a term in the index very quickly and then flip to a focused explanation of that term. This usually much faster than flailing around the web doing word searches for the same information. It is an expensive book, but I have saved in frustration what I spent in dollars. It is very difficult to keep it on my desk because it is borrowed so often.

Glenn Greenwald is the author, most recently, of With Liberty and Justice for Some and A Tragic Legacy. Why is Edward Snowden so alone?

It is 4 AM and I have just finished reading, in one sitting, the Kindle download of a book that I only intended to skim because I thought that I knew the full story. What was compelling was encountering the courage and decency of this whistleblower and that of the few brave journalists willing to honestly tell his story. That and the justifiable contempt for those in the housebroken media and compromised government who felt the need to besmirch the character of those willing to bear witness to crimes that almost everyone else in a position to know chose to ignore. The result is a page turner survey of just what the Snowden leaks tell us about the creation of the modern surveillance state and a reminder of the deep wisdom of this nation's founders in insisting on the Constitution's Fourth Amendment. This is a brilliant book that you will want to pass on to that neighbor absolutely convinced that the hollowing out of liberty has made us safer. Glenn Greenwald reminds us just why the Guardian and Washington Post won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in publishing the documents that Edward Snowden made available and how outrageous it is that his effort to inform the public of attacks on their freedom has left this brave young man a hunted fugitive.

Excellent book by Greenwald on US as a Surveillance State

A brief note before you purchase this book:
This is not a book written for the purpose of telling you the US government is watching your every step and every move, everyone knows that. And the author did not waste time replicating news articles you've already read through the media outlets. I finished this book within 5 hours, and thought it was well written and well worth your time.

Greenwald, one of the original journalists who revealed Snowden's leaks last year, did a remarkably good job on going over the history of U.S.'s surveillance tactics. In his new book, No Place to Hide, Greenwald briefly goes over his adventures/experience on meeting with Edward Snowden and revealing US's NSA surveillance program. Greenwald explains the difficulties and obstacles that were involved before the story went live, mostly by reluctant lawyers, and news agencies such as NYT and Washington Post. For those curious, Greenwald also explains in detail the true intentions of Edward Snowden.

Later chapters of the book reveal Greenwald's opinion on the recent NSA leaks, and his classification of US as a surveillance state.

Keep in mind that Greenwald was previously a columnist, and his writing style of a columnist is clearly seen throughout the book. This is not merely a book with facts, but a book with opinion, with logical and concrete evidence that not just the U.S., but other state actors are well, are progressing into what George Orwell wrote in his infamous 1984 novel (Orwellian state).

Greenwald ends the book by warning the consequences involved as we progress into the Orwellian state and the issue of journalists not being journalists, but being government puppets instead.

This is a highly recommended book for those who wish to read into detail one of the biggest government leaks in the history.

Dangerous idea -- the right to be let alone

No Place to Hide is about a dangerous idea -- the right to be let alone. It's not a puff piece meant to rouse one side or another. It's a nuanced story about how the Snowden files went down and why it matters. The book doesn't fatten the pages or waste time. It's factual. It's well-written and well-edited. It's a satisfying read.

No Place to Hide is about journalists, editors, lovers, a filmmaker, a whistle-blower, and the world's most influential newspapers, and television corporations. It is about a group of people who were cursed to live in interesting times, who were faced with decisions few of us will ever make. They had to learn to trust each other. It's a book about a group of people who were courageous enough to defend "the right to be left alone . . . the right most valued by a free people."

Greenwald tells a fascinating story about how each person put their professional careers and their personal freedom on the line, and in the case of Edward Snowden, his life on the line to expose documents to the entire world, so we can all decide what is true and what is not.

Greenwald's book includes high intrigue and an exotic locale, Hong Kong. It could be compared to an international thriller, and it is all that but it is more. It's like reading history as it happens, as it is lived, and that is thrilling.

Story is Moving Along -- Lots of Action, and. . . .

Only 4 stars because it was shorter than the other 4 parts, but it was GREAT!! I am BLOWN AWAY by Lisa's writing style and this story!!! She knows her end time stuff, but it never sounds preachy!! These characters get in your heart and you want to pray they'll be alright! Loved the Pillar of Fireflies! Loved it!! Such a creative element. Hoping that we'll hear more from Jaron -- and the message he is supposed to shout out! Bought this and read it in the middle of the night!!!! Just couldn't wait for morning. Looking for part 6 and the rest of the years, too!

About the Author

Arthur O’Sullivan is a professor of economics at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. After receiving his B.S. in economics at the University of Oregon, he spent two years in the Peace Corps, working with city planners in the Philippines. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 1981 and has taught at the University of California, Davis, and Oregon State University, winning teaching awards at both schools. He is the author of the best-selling textbook Urban Economics, currently in its eighth edition, with translations into Russian, Chinese, Korean, and Greek.

Professor O’Sullivan’s research explores economic issues concerning urban land use, environmental protection, and public policy. His articles have appeared in many economics journals, including the Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, National Tax Journal, Journal of Public Economics, and Journal of Law and Economics.

Professor O’Sullivan lives with his family in Portland, Oregon. For recreation, he enjoys hiking, kiteboarding, and squash.

Steven M. Sheffrin is professor of economics and executive director of the Murphy Institute at Tulane University. Prior to joining Tulane in 2010, he was a faculty member at the University of California, Davis, and served as department chairman of economics and dean of social sciences. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, Oxford University, London School of Economics, and Nanyang Technological University, and he has served as a financial economist with the Office of Tax Analysis of the United States Department of the Treasury. He received his B.A. from Wesleyan University and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Professor Sheffrin is the author of 10 other books and monographs and over 100 articles in the fields of macroeconomics, public finance, and international economics. His most recent books include Rational Expectations (second edition) and Property Taxes and Tax Revolts: The Legacy of Proposition 13 (with Arthur O’Sullivan and Terri Sexton).

Professor Sheffrin has taught macroeconomics and public finance at all levels, from general introduction to principles classes (enrollments of 400) to graduate classes for doctoral students. He is the recipient of the Thomas Mayer Distinguished Teaching Award in economics. He lives with his wife Anjali (also an economist) in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has two daughters who have studied economics. In addition to a passion for current affairs and travel, he plays a tough game of tennis.

Stephen J. Perez is a professor of economics and NCAA faculty athletics representative at California State University, Sacramento. After receiving his B.A. in economics at the University of California, San Diego, he was awarded his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Davis, in 1994. He taught economics at Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington State University before coming to California State University, Sacramento, in 2001. He teaches macroeconomics at all levels as well as econometrics, sports economics, labor economics, and mathematics for economists.

Professor Perez’s research explores most macroeconomic topics. In particular, he is interested in evaluating the ability of econometric techniques to discover the truth, issues of causality in macroeconomics, and sports economics. His articles have appeared in many economics journals, including the Journal of Monetary Economics; Econometrics Journal; Economics Letters; Journal of Economic Methodology; Public Finance and Management; Journal of Economics and Business; Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics; Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking; Applied Economics; and Journal of Macroeconomics.

This is the worst course ware I've dealt with in 13 years of school - and the most expensive.
The online experience is clunky, glitchy and frequently had WRONG answers. Pearson should be ashamed of this product and for charging students so much for it. Study guides are just a repeat of homework assignments.
The teaching mechanisms are flawed, multiple choice questions teach you nothing.
Examples given as learning tools are frequently absurd and pointless like [parents will buy fewer books for their child than the government would have for them buy because parents see less return on their investment than the government does]. Stupid.

If you have other course options that do not require you to use this book and online course, take them.

Fate has a way of smiling down on a couple. No matter how long it takes, Fate will have their due.

It took fifteen years for Shay to realize that she has been sabotaging her own love life. As a young girl, she fell hard for her brother’s best friend. She didn’t know better, but she followed Joe around idolizing him. From that time on, all her boyfriends never stood a chance. With a new start ahead of her, she is ready to start over. As soon as she gets her brother’s next fling out of her shower!

Well getting away and coming home couldn’t have ended up better. A couple of years ago, Joe set his eyes on the grown up Shay and he didn’t know what hit him. Now that he will be in town on business, he is going to take every chance he can get to show her the new him. But first things first after a long day of traveling…a hot shower.

One strong, single minded man and one stubborn but extremely pragmatic woman could make for a very ordinary story. Shay wants to be strong, but she has such a hard time when it comes to Joe. So she will take what she can get and enjoy it. Too bad Joe wants forever, when all Shay can think of is right now.

I loved their play. The chase was fun and their interactions were spunky. You saw trouble in the horizon heading their way. When it finally hit home it was a doozy, but not capitalized on completely in my opinion. It was forgiven a bit too easily and the conclusion was a bit fast, but all in all it was a very fun story. All the experiences that happen before the ending more than make up for it.

Ms. Holt writes such fun characters and even though I knew who played the role of Fate, it was still fun to watch it all unfold.

Forward Pass

Joe used to be one of the best quarterbacks in the game. He had woman hanging on his every word from high school to the NFL. Shay has been in love with Joe since they were kids, but she has seen how much of a player he truly is. When they both end up staying at her brother's alone Joe realizes she's not the brat she used to be and Shay still thinks he's a player. Can Shay see he's changed? Will Joe show her all his secrets?

I have to say the first couple chapters yanked me into this read. I loved the idea of the unrequited love from the older brothers best friend, the tag-a-long little bratty sister. But then the dropped the ball somewhere and I started predicting the story line. No surprises was a straightforward and a little boring. The secrets that were kept would have a normal man bragging from the rooftops to show his worth, Joe not so much.

I have read others by this author and really enjoyed them, this one just feel a little flat for me.

I couldn't wait to read Desiree Holt's newest book, Forward Pass, after seeing the gorgeous cover and that the story involved one of my favorite tropes...falling in love with brother's best friend. Shay Beckham has had a huge crush on star quarterback, Joe Reilly ever since she was a young girl and now, she is determined to get over him once and for all. Joe has to live down his womanizing past and hope that Shay can see him for the reformed man he is now.

These two had lots of chemistry and the sex between these two throughout the book was scorching hot, as this author sure knows how to bring on the heat. I enjoyed the bantering these two engaged in and I loved that my favorite quarterback, Joe Montana, was Shay's football hero as well. I really enjoyed watching Joe and Shay embark on a real relationship and like any relationship, trust and communication was an issue with them. Shay was independent and sassy but she really needed to move on about Joe's past and not be so insecure and judgmental. Her insecurities really showed with these moments and she's stronger than that. I really liked Joe and how he turned his life around but he should have been more upfront with her about his involvement with charities and other stuff going on in his life. He asked her to trust him but that goes both ways as well. It takes two to make or break a relationship and I spent the whole time rooting for Joe and Shay. There were some memorable moments that had me swooning. I enjoyed this story immensely despite the character flaws because emotions overrule at times. This was a great beginning and I'm looking forward to the next book in this new series.
