"...an important contribution to the science...blessed with elegant and lucid prose...Practitioners always benefit from acquaintance with the history of their science...McIntosh's book is the ideal source." Roger Lewin, Science Books & Films real ecology from every fad and fancy that claims to be environmentally based while simultaneously urging ecologists to accept responsibility for providing guidance on managment of the environment from both theoretical and empirical bases. Roger Lewin, Science Books and Films

"This is a book of the history of ecology, written by an ecologist who loves history, or perhaps a historian who has an unusual understanding of ecology and its roots. I am convinced of the depth of his vision...If you have been wondering what has been going on in the broad field of ecology while you have been busy with more mundane problems, I can recommend this book to you." Thorough but confusing
By yettobeseen
This is no doubt a thorough account of the history of ecology, but in so being, it is confusing to read in several ways. I was looking for a book that covered the development of ideas in ecology, and how the field advanced to what it is today. It does cover these ideas, but they are difficult to extract from the text. Most of the text goes back and forth on this person or that person, this habitat or that, and does little to synthesize the progress of ecological concepts. Instead of following a general trend of progress in ecology, the author takes the reader through a maze with no clear direction. It is divided into different levels of ecology (e.g., populations, communities, ecosystems) but with transending themes (e.g., dynamics, theoretical, application) and habitat and taxonomy(terrestrial plant ecology, terrestrial animal ecology, limnology, oceanography) discussed separately. So much for general principles that pervade all taxonomic groups and habitats. It would have been much more clear if it followed one pattern (e.g., time periods, major ecologists, conception and development of major ideas) instead of jumping back and forth on different methods of tracking history. In the end I have read a lot of text with very little learned about the history of ecology. I still don't understand how different concepts developed through empirical and theoretical support and refinement, in many cases who originally conceived the concept, and what impact these concepts had on the field of ecology in retrospect. Nor is it clear which of the older literature is still worth reading because of its continued relevance. I must say though, that I enjoyed hearing about concepts being credited to a particular author even though they were addressed in earlier texts. But this gave me the feeling that little has progressed in ecology, and old ideas are just being rediscovered and credited to someone else. The field of ecology still needs a clear, logically organized history of ideas, scientists, literature, and progress because this book will fall short in accessibility for most.

Praise for the Third Edition:

In this comprehensive textbook on palliative care nursing, editors Marianne Matzo and Deborah Witt Sherman succeed in bringing together the heart of nursing and the true meaning of palliative care with the most current evidence based practice." --GeriPal

This fourth edition of a comprehensive text/reference that has been valued by students, educators, and practicing nurses for many years, Palliative Care Nursing continues to reflect the fundamental hospice and palliative care nursing competencies---both basic and advanced--that are essential for effective and empathetic care of patients and families. This new edition reflects the tremendous growth of this vital discipline into the mainstream of health care and focuses on palliative care that is responsive to the demand for health care reform in America and globally. It provides the knowledge, scientific evidence, and skills needed by nurses to address the complex physical, emotional, social, sexual, and spiritual needs of patients and families within the context of a changing health care delivery system. With a focus on inter-professional collaboration, the book emphasizes the value of complementary, holistic models in promoting health and wholeness across the illness trajectory, even as death approaches.

The book is edited by Project on Death in America Faculty Scholars, who have worked to develop, implement, and evaluate nursing initiatives in palliative care in the U.S. and internationally. With a focus on both quality of life and economic imperatives, interdisciplinary authors describe the management of specific diseases and related physical and psychological symptoms, and care of patients during the dying process. They cover assessment of key symptoms and pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and complementary interventions. Taking a life-span approach, the book includes age-appropriate nursing considerations. Key points at the beginning of each chapter and callouts containing evidenced-based information highlight best practices. The text also examines relevant legal, ethical, and cultural considerations and offers case studies with conclusions in each clinical chapter.

New to the Fourth Edition:

  • Thoroughly revised and expanded
  • Three new chapters addressing palliative care amidst health care reform, rehabilitation in chronic or serious illness, and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • A conceptual framework table in each chapter identifying the National Quality Forum Domains of Palliative Care and Basic and Advanced Palliative Care and Hospice Nursing Competencies
  • Updated evidence-based callouts that review the highest-quality studies

I'm taking an End-of-life graduate (MSN) course and this book was a required text. I'm a Certified Hospice & Palliative Care Nurse and this book has proven to be a good, comprehensive refresher that I enjoy reading. This is one of those textbooks I will keep for reference even after the course is completed.

  • show biz bio of singing duo The Carpenters

From Publishers Weekly
Despite a clean-cut image that put them distinctly at odds with the glam-rock and disco styles of other '70's bands, the Carpenters, renowned for such mellifluous hits as "Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun," were one of the most successful pop acts of the time. But like many of their more flamboyant colleagues, they had problems: Richard Carpenter suffered through a bout of severe chemical dependency (from which he eventually recovered) while his sister Karen battled anorexia nervosa, resulting in her death in 1983. Although rock journalist Ray Coleman's ( Lennon ) authorized biography is ostensibly a history of the Carpenters' career as pop icons, it also doubles as a case study of an anorexic, beginning and ending with accounts of Karen's final days and recording in meticulous, and at times almost intrusive, detail her struggles with her weight and her self-image. Coleman avoids pathologizing Karen or offering pat explanations for her condition. Instead, he impartially weaves together commentary, ranging from the affectionate to the critical, about Karen and Richard's lives and careers from the various viewpoints of family members, friends and associates, including Richard Carpenter himself. Well-researched, well-written and less gossipy than most celebrity bios, this offers insights into the workings of the music industry. Photos not seen by PW.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The Carpenters' music was assailed in its time as "treacle, drippy easy listening, or even schlock music." Its critics proceeded, however, from a false premise--that it was rock music. In the 1970s--the Carpenters' career zenith--rock was Rock, self-important and serious. But the Carpenters were creating pop, light and melodic. As the 1970s recede into history, the Carpenters' gentle music has begun to be appreciated on its own merits. It belongs to a lineage that includes Georgia Gibbs and, at its most powerful, Judy Garland, rather than that of the Carpenters' contemporaries Led Zeppelin and David Bowie. Coleman's authorized biography treats Karen and Richard Carpenter sympathetically, recounting her struggles with anorexia nervosa and evaluating her vocal abilities and his arranging talents as elements of a pop rather than a rock style. Their music may not have taken any risks, Coleman concludes, but it was well crafted and well executed. (The selected discography that follows the main text reminds us how extensive it was, too.) Regardless of how one feels about the Carpenters' music, Coleman's account of the brother-sister act is compelling, especially in its portrait of Karen as a talented, famous young woman in the grips of an overpowering disease then little known or understood. Mike Tribby

From Kirkus Reviews
The emphasis here leans more to Karen than to Richard, the acknowledged brains behind their arrangements. Their story is classic Americana, in both success and failure: two clean-cut kids from the suburbs who just love to make music together hit it big, and when Richard develops a pill addiction and Karen hits a low of 78 pounds, Coleman lays the blame on their overbearing and undemonstrative parents. To this day their mother insists that there was no psychological reason behind her daughter's starvation, believing instead that ``Karen was simply gripped by an iron determination to get very thin and stay that way.'' Coleman also traces Karen's problems back to early negative media comments about their ``square'' appearance amid the wild atmosphere in the music industry of the late-60's. While he keeps insisting that the group was never bland, Coleman's anecdotes reinforce the plain-toast image: their reproducing, note for note, the arrangements from their records when performing live; changing lyrics--e.g., ``sleep with you'' became ``be with you''--so as not to sully Karen's good- girl image; and proudly appearing at the Nixon White House in 1972. It is true that at the time of Karen's death relatively little was known about anorexia nervosa, but the eating disorder has since become familiar, and Coleman's glancing treatment of it reveals little that is new. A dual-celebrity bio that retells well-worn stories. -- Copyright 1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Tragic story.
By Neil Parker
Like all the other reviewers of this book I am a long time fan of the Carpenters.

I bought this book in 1994 when it was first published and was pleased to be able to read about the history of Richard and Karen and to get an insight into their lives. I learned a lot about them both.

Looking back, and having read some of the other reviews here I can only speculate that yes a lot of things will have been kept out of the book. Richard Carpenter is a very private man, and I suspect that he will have been involved in deciding what would be included in the book and what he wished to keep private. Why should he bare every single detail of his family's business for worldwide consumption? Would you or I do the same?

The Carpenters' story is a cautionary tale: Be careful what you wish for. Karen and Richard craved success but success ultimately killed Karen Carpenter didn't it?

There will be certain things which will stay in the Carpenter family forever and we must accept this. There are no conspiracy theories here. Richard worshipped his sister, yes they came from an extremely close family and were incredibly protective of each other. Karen's demise came at a time when anorexia was virtually unheard of. If this was happening now things would be different.

Let's not get too excited about whether Richard smoked, or how many times Karen had sex Mr Koenig. Do we really need to know? This is a very informative book which is very revealing in lots of areas.

God bless you Karen. Thank you for your beautiful legacy. And thank you Richard for your artistry.

Balanced view of the lives behind the music
By Marsena Cook
Growing up in a Christian household, The Carpenters' music were among the few secular artists we listened to. My introduction to the Carpenters was when my parents bought their 1980 Christmas album. We played it almost to death! In fact, I remember as a teenager overdubbing harmonies with my own voice using two tape recorders, just like the Carpenters did on their albums. I was about to turn 10 years old the very month Karen Carpenter died. I could hardly believe she was gone, because the memory of her beautiful voice was so powerful. I was 15 when the ABC movie on the Carpenters came out, which let me see a glimpse of the reason for the tragic end of Karen's life.
As an adult, reading Ray Coleman's book brings back fond memories of the Carpenters and their music. It also gives disturbing insight into the sadness, the anorexia, the complex relationship with their loving yet undemonstrative parents, and the overwhelming need of both Richard and Karen to be perfect yet both desiring to be human.
I hope to see a documentary video based from this book, along with updates on Richard's life today. The Carpenters will always have my respect for being true to their talent rather than trying to fit into the "image" of everyone else. I will always enjoy their music.

Review
"I wish that Ron Cody's new book, Learning SAS by Example: A Programmer's Guide, had been around when I was first learning SAS! This impressive book steadily moves the reader from SAS novice to SAS authority in 26 well-written, well-paced chapters. All of the basics are covered in this book; the fundamentals of the DATA step, getting data into and out of SAS, conditional and iterative processing, SAS functions and formats, important SAS procedures, creating frequency and tabular reports, and generating output in publishable formats such as RTF and PDF.
This book is well suited for people who are just learning SAS, as well as for people who would like a broad-based SAS reference. There are plenty of solid examples that emphasize the material in the chapters. Each chapter ends with exercises that test the reader's understanding of the concepts and the SAS code presented. Because of its pacing, breadth, and scope, I have no doubt that Learning SAS by Example: A Programmer's Guide will become the preferred book for learning SAS software in business, government, and educational institutions the world over. " --Michael A. Raithel, Senior Systems Analyst, Westat

"Ron Cody's newest book can serve not only as a textbook for a SAS programming course, but also as a reference for intermediate-level programmers. The book begins with basic data input methods and advances through merging data sets and more complex tasks.
I would recommend Learning SAS by Example: A Programmer's Guide to anyone wishing to learn or refresh his/her SAS programming skills. " --Karol H. Katz, M.S., Programmer Analyst, Yale University School of Medicine

"Ron Cody has earned a reputation as an excellent lecturer, instructor, and author. His most recent work, Learning SAS by Example: A Programmer's Guide, does not merely adhere to his historic level of excellence; it raises it to a new level.
Ron has succeeded in condensing the major components of Base SAS into one easy-to-read book. Using simple examples, he illustrates the use of the DATA step and many of its components, basic PROCs, and even macros and ODS.
Learning SAS by Example: A Programmer's Guide is now at the top of my list of texts to assist programmers in teaching themselves SAS. " --Andrew T. Kuligowski, SouthEast SAS Users Group

Kindle Edition is bad reproduction of the hard copy
By Lekhak
Bought the Kindle Edition of this book.

1. It was very convenient. Received the book on my 'Kindle for PC' and started reading the book within 2 minutes of ordering - so faster than picking up a book in store. ;)

2. The formatting was well off. The kindle version has no indentations and all programs and input file data is listed in free flowing text format.

Here are a couple of examples... (Would have posted pics, but scared of the media rights police.)

a. The programs are listed as:
Statement_1; Statement_2; Statement_3;...

b. Input is listed with no line breaks:
Input_row_1 Input_row_2 Input_row_3...

c. Tables which should be listed as:
A1 B2 C3
D1 E2 F3
.. .. ..

are instead listed as:
A1 D1 B2 E2 C3 F3 .. .. ..

3. Contacted Amazon Customer Service who acknowledged the issue and offered a return (within 7 days of purchase - worked fine for me as I bought the book just yesterday) as can be expected from the #1 Customer Service in the online world. Not sure how accommodating they are for customers who do not open the book and find the issue within the 7 day limit - I myself have lots of new books on my bookshelf which I havent opened/read even after a year.

4. Ordered a hard copy of the same book. Did not wait on a refund for the Kindle edition. Guess Amazon CS will come through with this as always - will update this review once its all settled.

5. I was on a flow with the book and want to continue from where I left off ASAP. So I just paid $$$ to upgrade the shipping on this hard copy to 1 day. The reason could very well be that I was spoiled by the convenience offered by Kindle.

Press Censorship in Elizabethan England, by Cyndia Susan Clegg

This is a revisionist history of press censorship in the rapidly expanding print culture of the sixteenth century. Clegg establishes the nature and source of the controls, and evaluates their means and effectiveness. By considering the literary and bibliographical evidence of books that were censored, and placing them in the literary, religious, economic and political culture of the time, Clegg concludes that press control was neither a routine nor a consistent mechanism. The book will become the standard reference work on Elizabethan press censorship.

Well-researched, yet undermined by 2nd portion's lack of focus.
By Solo
No Logo is a surprisingly well-researched book, if you can get past the obvious contradiction on the front cover and binding of this major-label production. Whether the "All Rights Reserved" copyrighted logo is meant to be ironic or merely obligatory concessions to the publishing house, it still reflects Klein poorly: either as a powerless pawn or else having a bad sense of humor.

Purely on content, however, as all books should be judged, No Logo quickly shows you this is no left-wing, hippie diatribe of over-generalization, with facts shunted to the wayside. Instead, it reads like a well-planned documentary, meticulously annotated and researched. Klein masterfully identifies the root problem of laissez-faire economics, market-oriented policies, and capitalism in general. For those of us who are a bit slow to comprehend the dramatic shift that has taken place in the free-market business world, Klein neatly diagrams the subtle and not-so-subtle shifts the private, for-profit sector of mainstream business has taken in its quest to orient away from developing products and focus on the development of brands. This paradigmatic shift has launched a new era of capitalism, changing it drastically from our predecessors' definition.

Klein maps out the expansion of advertising into all aspects of human life, the lack of "unbranded space", the Borg-like assimilation process that marketing initiates, devouring all niches, reactions, backlashes and resistance. With this process of lifestyle branding and perpetual advertising adaption, Klein shows the effects of this system of separation of brands and products. She details the flood of franchising, corporate mergers, private-sectors profit-maker's censorship, outsourcing, the exploitation of third-world labor, the creation of "McJobs" inside service economies and the growth of temporary labor and permanent "freelancing".

Klein derails, however, in her attempts to document the anti-corporate activist movement. What has been so far a masterful critique of globalization and corporatism focuses instead on grassroots activism and culture jammers. She spends almost one hundred pages describing (without unqualified praise, to her credit) underground rings of vandals and lone "anti-brand" guerrillas who deface corporate advertising by some irrational belief that their actions will persuade mainstream, moderate Westerners to change their consumption habits to ones approved by vigilantes drawing skulls and rewriting logos. If her discussion of them is to document an overall noble and worthy cause (that is, anti-corporate resistance), then addressing culture jammers in anything but a negative light only serves to tarnish an up until now, very polished presentation. Along with eliminating this episode, Klein would do her cause service by eschewing her description of RTS's absurdities in favor of a more detailed assessment of collectives and people's movements, such as the Zapatistas: uprisings that are rooted firmly in the reality of economics and egalitarian living-- rather than the short-term frivolity of dangerous quasi-riots, or the childish response of throwing pies at CEOs.

Klein also fails to precisely pinpoint what exactly her target is. She explains that it is more than attacking branding; it is about citizenship, not consumerism. Neither is it about attacking corporations via purchasing power. She explains much about activists' activities, but by the time she concludes her narrative, she has done little to address what exactly is the goal-- besides her vague wish for "unbranded spaces". The afterword (written in 2002) perhaps provides a better insight into what she was getting at when she talks about egalitarian movements and non-homogenization.

No Logo is an excellent book if one is interested in learning the largely ignored facts about branding, advertising, and labor politics; it is not a very convincing polemic for those skeptical of non-privatized solutions. With the debilitating portrayal of culture jamming and RTS as equals to the more mature approaches of student and political organizations described, No Logo undoes itself in short order; easily dismissed by those of the conservative persuasion. Although Klein does cover the anti-globalization movement with a broad, documentary-style brush, the pages of No Logo lack cynosure towards social cooperative, collective solutions, feeling reactionary more than inspirational.

a keeper, wish i had this in hardbound.
By john r
this book is an excellent read for people trying to understand how modern marketing and branding works. Naomi answers a lot of questions about what brands are, why theyre important, how they work, and the consequences of them. I spent the first 5 chapters absolutely crucified by rage however, as her examples are very familiar.

Read it 2012
By Evelyn Waugh
As I just read this book, it didn't have the same impact it may have in 1999. Klein is almost optimistic about the changes she was seeing. However, 13 years later and addidas is still getting in trouble for using sweatshops to make clothing for the Olympics... Not much has changed. I didn't necessarily agree with her denouncement of advertisements, because in a way it seems a good advertisement is a form of art... but in general I felt pretty sad that we do this to the third world. Its important that we hold corperations responsible for the treatment of their workers in the third world...

Ezra, by Dr. Bill Creasy

The prophet Jeremiah warned that Israel would spend 70 years in captivity for its willful and persistent disobedience. At the end of 70 years, however, God raises up Cyrus the Great, king of Persia, who allows not only the Jews, but all of the people taken captive by Assyria and Babylon, to return home and rebuild their cities, temples and infrastructures.

In Ezra we witness the exiles' return to rebuild the temple. Destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C., the temple is rebuilt and dedicated in 516 B.C. But it is nothing like the fabulous temple Solomon built. In fact, when those who had seen Solomon's temple see the second temple, they weep at its inadequacy!

Excellent Bible Study
By Steven A. Davis
This series contains the audio from class lectures by Dr. Bill Creasy.

Dr. Creasy covers each book verse-by-verse, providing context to the material by explaining other passages in the Bible that may relate to a passage under study, with descriptions of corresponding historical events and the geography and their relationship to the passage, as well as anecdotes from his travels or study. I find it extremely helpful to study the Bible in context with geography and history.

As explained in the opening lesson on Genesis, this study starts with Genesis in the Old Testament, then moves to Matthew in the New Testament, then Exodus and Leviticus in the Old Testament, then back to Mark in the New Testament, and so on. Dr. Creasy does this because 1) if covered in weekly segments, as done in his class, it would be in year 5 before he got to Matthew, and 2) to help show the relationship between Old Testament and New Testament.

According to the syllabus I received from Dr. Creasy (he sometimes deviates from this in class), Ezra is the twenty-fourth in the Logos Bible Study series, preceded by Galatians and followed by Nehemiah. Ezra has 10 chapters, and the study is comprised of 4 lessons. Total time - 2 hours, 35 minutes.
