About the Author

Dr. Socorro Herrera serves as a professor of Elementary Education at Kansas State University and directs the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) in the College of Education. Her K-12 teaching experience includes an emphasis on literacy development. Her research focuses on literacy opportunities with culturally and linguistically diverse students, reading strategies, and teacher preparation for diversity in the classroom. Dr. Herrera has published three books with Allyn and Bacon, Mastering ESL and Bilingual Methods: Differentiated Instruction for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (2005), Assessment Accommodations for Classroom Teachers of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (2007), and most recently, Teaching Reading to English Language Learners: Differentiated Literacies (2010).�Dr. Herrera has authored articles for numerous nationally known journals such as the Bilingual Research Journal, Journal of Hispanic Higher Education, Journal of Research in Education, and the Journal of Latinos and Education.

Dr. Kevin Murry is currently an Associate Professor of Secondary Education at Kansas State University and is the Director of Research and Development for the Center for Intercultural and Multilingual Advocacy (CIMA) in the College of Education. His work in research and development has focused on ESL/dual language programming in secondary public schools and teachers’ accommodation readiness for CLD students whose first language is not English and transnational students. Dr. Murry's recent research has emphasized differentiated assessment strategies for CLD students, the professional development of highly-qualified teachers for ELL students, the linguistic and cross-cultural dynamics of ESL instruction, and school restructuring for linguistic diversity. �Dr. Murry’s recent publications have appeared in the Journal of Teaching and Learning, Reading and Writing Quarterly, AACTE Briefs, the Journal of Latinos and Education, as well as, Teacher Education and Practice.�

Best Game Development Book for Beginners - Period

Anyone looking to learn how to develop computer games has found the right book in "Beginning Game Programming". The reader is walked through the production of seven complete (and fun!) games, starting with a simple Memory type game, and moving up through various styles of games including a frogger clone and a Missile Defense clone, until finally ending with a game titled "Stunt Jumper", which brings together all of the techniques learned throughout the book. Morrison's method of teaching is really quite brilliant. Only the most essential parts of the source code are listed in the book, the rest is on the accompanying CD. Once a particular part of the code is explained, it isn't explained again later, even if it's central to the game being made. The reason for this is simple. It makes the user type the code again with each game, which reinforces the concepts presented. If you have to physically do it yourself every time (as you will when you are a professional game developer), you will have a much more solid grasp of both the code, and much more importantly, the concepts behind the code.

The reader is expected to already have a solid grasp of C++, and at least a partial understanding of Win32 programming. While others have complained about these requirements, I feel they are actually the books strong point. I've read many books geared towards beginning game programming - and all of them stop after giving you the basics. Very few of them actually walk you completely through making an entire game, let alone seven! Every aspect of game programming is shown here, from loading the bitmaps as resources to display on the screen, to getting music playing, to various ways of accepting input from the user, even going so far as to include joystick support. Lot's of little things that other books leave out are covered in detail also. Just how do you get a high score to display properly on the screen? Explained here. How do I get my background to scroll? Covered. How the heck am I supposed to eliminate that annoying flickering my sprites keep doing? No problem, this book will show you.

If you've ever been frustrated with other newbie style books either not giving enough information, or glossing over extremely complex processes without fulling explaining anything, then this book is for you. If you have no background whatsoever in programming, but want a quick route to learning game development, start with Game Development All in One (First Edition), and as soon as you've finished the section on Win32 programming, junk that book and move to this one. At the end you will have a completely solid grasp on game programming, and enough background to switch back to Game Development All in One and move on the chapters covering more complex stuff like DirectX.

Quite good, but not perfect

First of all, sorry for my bad English :

I've been programming C++ for a little while and I decided I was ready to learn more complex subject like game programming (that's what I love). So I bought that book (the French version, but's it's nearly the same book).

The book is well writen, and the games you make are fun. First thing, a lot of code (and especially the more complicated code, like the Bitmap class), are not explained on the book. For exemple for the Bitmap class, you have to copy the code which is on the CD, and you don't understand it... And some code are really complicated, like thei Bitmap class (again), and it's really strange because he writes his own Bitmap loader, whereas there's a Win32's function to do exactly the same, easier,...

But the worst thing is that the game engine is not powerfull at all. I know it's a beginning book but it is bad builded... And finally, Win32 API is not made for games, and I advise you to learn SDL, which is made for video games,...

About the Author
Dr. Jaideva Singh ( 1893-1986) : was a great scholar in musicology philosophy and Sanskrit. A former Principal of Y.D. Collegbe, Lakhimpurkheri,he also acted as a Chairman of U.P.Sangit natak Academi . He was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1974. His other works include : Siva Sutrras , Spanda-Karika, Pratybhijnahrdayam , Vijnanabhairava.

A little cryptic but informative

I got this as another translation of the Pratyabhijnahrdayam. I am most familiar with that of I.K. Taimni, the Secret of Self-Realization. This book is harder to read because of its organization. Most of the explanatory material is in endnotes at the back of the book, so you have to flip pages a lot. Humorously, in the footnotes, the author bashes a translation by a white guy who apparently got it all wrong. In the main text most explanation of each sutra is via translations of other Indian writings that pertain to the subject of each sutra. This is good for getting a broader view of the Indian literature. Compared to Taimni, Singh's work is more technical. He goes into more detail of a lot of the concepts in Kashmir Shavism, -that is to say, lists of technical terms- whereas Taimni tends to paint in broader brush strokes. To really grasp the material will require several readings and serious attempts to memorize the concepts. While one can see the similarity between Taimni's and Singh's interpretations, Singh's is clearly more technical. If you are interested in a comparative translation, or want a more detailed understanding of technical concepts in Kashmir Shavism, and also a broader introduction to this literature in general, then this is a fine book. If you are a complete beginner to the concepts, I would recommend Taimni's Secret of Self-realization first, it's a lot easier to understand.

Beyond Everything Else Lives the Wisdom of Prathabhijna

The 20 aphorisms contained in the Pratyabhijnahrdayam are to my mind the most powerful, intoxicating, profound, lucid, liberating, expanding, amazing collection of teachings anywhere. Not everyone can appreciate them, so I'll include an aphorism here to assist readers in deciding:

Sutra 1: The absolute Chiti (Universal power) of it's own free will is the cause of the Siddhi (manifestation) of the Universe.

Commentary:
It is only when Chiti, the ultimate consciousness-power comes into play that the Universe comes forth into being.

To me, this is such a powerful Sutra it gives me a thrill every time I read it. However, I know others who get no such reaction. If this sutra gives you a thrill, you can with full confidence purchase this book and treasure it deeply, as I do.

An Enthralling Text for Esotericists

This canonical Kashmir Shavism text is “must” reading for serious students of esoteric spirituality. First, it describes the cosmogonic process--the process of manifestation whereby Consciousness coagulates into energy and matter—on a level exceeding any other text I’ve encountered. According to Pratyabhijnahrdayam (The Doctrine of Recognition), this coagulation, or crystallization and constriction, occurs through thirty-six hierarchically, or progressively stepped-down, constituent principles (“tattvas”). From the standpoint of humans, the end result of this emanational process is self-contraction, the imprisonment and shrinkage of one’s consciousness—and the goal of Kashmir Shaivism Yoga is to free, or infinitely expand, one’s bound consciousness.

According to Pratyabhijnahrdayam, what’s necessary to free one’s contracted consciousness is the recognition of one’s True Nature as Siva, Supreme All-Pervading Consciousness. But in order to achieve this recognition, or recovery, of one’s True Nature, Grace is necessary—and Grace is the descent of Divine Power (Shaktipat), which is the same Power, or Light-energy, as the Holy Spirit.

If you’re interested in “Cosmic Drama,” the terrible and tragic imprisonment of human consciousness and its heroic attempt to free itself via Spirit Power, I trust that you’ll find this text an enthralling read.

Impressive. Ought to have won the Booker Prize in '91

From beginning to end, Amis has managed to sustain a wonderful conceit: the inversion of time. The idea isn't original but this execution is complete and nearly perfect. Yes, the story somewhat pays homage to Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five but it is a weak parallel. Slaughterhouse-Five is a book where time is treated non-linearly and yet the narrative follows more or less the conventional marching forward. A better example really is T.H. White's The Sword in the Stone where a major character lives backwards in time. Merlin comes from the future, converges towards the age of young King Arthur and sweeps past into the past.
In Time's Arrow, the narrator from the very first words "I moved forward, out of the blackest sleep, ..." experiences time inverted. From death to birth, the narrator must learn of the past by experiencing the world - he is naive as to the events of the past - day-by-day inside Tod's body (growing younger). Tod is the Nazi war criminal whose secret life unfolds - backwards. Oddly, the narrator appears naive has he is forced to speculate on the past based only on his knowledge of the present and future. He does not know the past. And he is often wrong, just as we are in predicting the future.
Perhaps the most puzzingly aspect of the novel is the identity of the narrator. The narrator may be the protagonist or may be not ...It is ambiguous. Certainly, the narrator "rides" in the head of Tod Friendly (and his aliases) but he experiences the world mechanically like a closed circuit security camera. The narrator can only see and smell and hear what Tod sees and smells and hears. The narrator can not experience the thoughts or emotions of Tod. Strange but very rewarding. The narrator does see Tod's dreams. All very disorienting.
But the de-familiarization of this backwards world has a peculiar effect on the re-telling of the atrocities of Auschwitz. Simply, narrator cuts through this horrifyingly familiar world of evil and allows the reader to ponder it as new - just as the naive narrator encounters it all for the first time.
In short, this is a great book not because of its virtuosity in creating an inverted world, but by opening up a new possibility in literature. Why not tell stories backwards? Knowing what we know now, can we predict the past? Funnily enough, the world of science - geology, biology - is all too familiar with this novelty. It is only in literature where time must march forward.

"And I within, who came at the wrong time..."

At the moment of Dr Tod T. Friendly's death, a consciousness is born and then witnesses the doctor's entire life - lived backwards. The voice trails the doctor through his early retirement, his last years of work and degenerating relationships, then back through his heyday as a surgeon, his life in New York, various name changes, and then back via ship to postwar Europe. At first nothing seems to make sense for the narrating consciousness: people are talking and walking backwards; relationships begin with tearful meetings and slapped faces and end with coy moments in hospital corridors; mysterious, coded letters emerge from the flames of the fireplace; and the doctor and his colleagues work passionately at making healthy people sick, or wounding them and throwing them into ambulances to be taken back onto the streets. But finally, when we follow the good doctor back to his time at Auschwitz, life begins to make sense at last. There, he and his colleagues are doing something wonderful: they are creating the Jewish race. Pulling smoke and ashes from the sky, assembling the debris into human beings, bringing them to life with gas, letting them work their way into health, then uniting them with family members and sending them off by train to flourish in the towns and cities of Europe... What at first seems like a rather trivial exercise in literary game-playing - the conceit of narrating a life lived backwards - becomes, in fact, the device which enables Amis to deliver one of the most effective and affecting condemnations of the Holocaust without writing a single word against it. By showing it in reverse - by inverting its objectives, its sequence and its consequences - Amis renders the Nazi program in all its grotesque obscenity. The camps are plainly revealed as the sickening inversion, the opposite, of everything good in the world: love, decency, creativity, freedom. Many have noted that these places, these crimes, have an existential meaning beyond politics or shock or pity. They have become symbols of our own inturned nihilism. As Peter Handke has explained, the idea of the camps is so compelling for us because in them the whole of life's demonic undertow has found, at last, its specific image. Amis draws it clearly - he shows us how and why Handke's statement is true, and that makes this bold and striking novel essential reading.

Amis at his best. An incredible feat of writing, what with the reverse timeline, and not gimmicky. Laugh out loud funny and yet poignant about the Holocaust and ultimate human darkness.
