Great Follow-up to Book 1
By Appleheartebc
Adam is back in Philly and Sylvia is with him, building a relationship that may be permanent. He had been working on getting things ready for a senator from his State and a French Ambassador who were going to visit Philly when the Senator's aide was killed in a shooting that was either meant for the Senator or the Ambassador, in the Ambassador's home in DC. Because of this, he had to cancel all the arrangements already made and because the aide's family is influential and rich, he was assigned to go to DC to help investigate. We are introduced to Sam, a former cop who now works as a member of the Dignitary Protection Unit in DC, Ramona, a DC cop and several FBI agents who have taken over the investigation from the DCDPU because a senator and a French Ambassador were involved. Adam, Sam and Ramona were not too happy because they felt that the FBI was focused on the two dignitaries and the aide's death was going to be unimportant. Despite Adam's not having any authority to investigate, the three decided to conduct their own investigation.

There are many twists and turns and many possible suspects (red herrings) that I was going: the perpetrator is this, then no, it's that person, and later on hmm, maybe that one. I almost always guess correctly but the author surprised me at the end.

I really enjoyed this book and will be adding the author in my author's auto buy list because I like to see the growth of the characters I met in previous books. I will again be recommending this book to friends and family members who enjoy reading good mysteries.

I'm really enjoying this series.

I'm really enjoying this series. After reading the first book, I was anxious to read about Adam's second adventure/mystery. The book was a quick read, exciting with plenty of red herrings, and a satisfying ending. I was glad to see that Sylvia was there and enjoyed the highs and lows of their growing relationship. I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review and hope that it is helpful to both the reader and the author. Now it's time to hunker down with book three!

Like her first book

I found the mystery interesting from beginning to end. It was a well-written page turning story, that kept you guessing. Her characters were strong, believable. Like her first book, I found her descriptions spot on. Giving just enough detail without bogging down the story. Can't wait to read her third book.
I received this book as a complimentary gift from reading deals for a fair and honest review.

The Neurotic's Guide to Avoiding Enlightenment: How the Left-Brain Plays Unending Games of Self-Improvement, by Chris Niebauer Phd

Are youready to give up on self-improvement?

More than ever people are on a quest for self-improvement and enlightenment. People are "watching" their egos or losing their egos in order to find peace of mind or to get along better with others. And yet, the more we try to lose our ego, the more of it there is to lose. The more we try to make peace, the more we find conflict. It is exactly what happens when we try not to think of the number 3 and that is all we can think about. Our efforts seem to have the opposite effect and this is due to the way the left side of the brain processes information. Neuroscience discovered that the left brain makes up elaborate stories and convincing explanations. It is the left brain that makes up the most elaborate and convincing story of all, the story of who you think you are. And the more we try to get out of this story, the deeper we find ourselves in it because it is the function of the left brain to work on the law of opposition. Try not to be anxious and that's exactly what happens. Try not to worry and you will be flooded with anxious thoughts. And the same is true for self-improvement. The more we try to improve our story, the more the story needs to be improved. The left brain excels at these games even when it plays by pretending not to play. If I said that all attempts at self-improvement are futile, how would you respond? Would you reflexively think I'm wrong? Is there any way not to play these games of the left brain? Which part of your brain do you think is asking this question?

This book was written for the ordinary person who has an extraordinary curiosity for who they are, how thoughts work and why they cannot control their thoughts. It is a practical guide that uses examples from my kids, favorite movies and TV shows from the 80s and 90s along with simple exercises so you can see for yourself if any of this is on track. While no special knowledge of the neurosciences is required, you may understand many of the examples if you've seen an episode or two of Star Trek or Seinfeld. While this work is based on the teachings of Alan Watts and Eckhart Tolle it integrates the findings of modern neuroscience which surprisingly reveals a similar message. It is the desire for enlightenment that is the biggest block to happiness and peace, in fact, it is the only block. It is not until one gives up the quest to find oneself, improve oneself or be more spiritual, that one can ever find the peace they are looking for. And it isnot your ego that gives up this quest, it is you.

The Neurotic's Guide to Avoiding Enlightenment succeeds in its goal of providing a reasoned assessment of reality, illusion, ego and self; probing the process behind the psyche's development and perceptions and offering readers much food for thought and illumination.

Reviewed by Ed Bennett for IndieReader

The central premise to this book is that no matter how hard we try to improve ourselves we will not be able to do so, despite what the self-improvement books tell us. Essentially, one needs to stop trying to improve, relax and try to live in the moment without the left-brain trying to make sense out of our surroundings.

Despite technical language, THE NEUROTIC'S GUIDE TO AVOIDING ENLIGHTENMENT presents a creative method for self-improvement as well as a deeper understanding of our phobias.

Listening to Doctor Spock but Following Captain Kirk
By mcfin din
This book is about many things and was, at first, difficult for me to find a single cohesive theme. My liberal arts background was primed for a beginning, middle and end, but in dealing with this material, there is no way to deliver information in a neatly wrapped package. Professor Chris Niebauer states at one point in the book, "Perhaps the lack of consistency is something you noticed while reading this. What is the book about? Psychology? Science? Spirituality?"

It was, in fact, about all of those, with quite a bit of "the new consciousness movement" mixed in.

Niebauer, a college professor of Neuropsychology, presents what ultimately turns out to be a stimulating examination dealing with left- brain, right brain responses. I learned that we are a product of an evolutionary left-brain "interpreter" which has (probably) saved us from extinction by providing a modicum of paranoia, caution and dare I say - good sense early in our evolution, so that instead of running towards our early predators, we ran from them, thus avoiding being eaten.

This isn't meant to be facetious, though it is, perhaps, a bit satirical, as the cover of the book boasts a Buddha with a sardonically lifted left eyebrow which turns out to be a feisty clue to the tone of the book.

A significant portion of the book discusses the work of Michael Gazzaniga, whose research. along with Roger Sperry, on the "split-brain" and free will is frequently cited. "Free will is an illusion," says Gazzaniga. This is augmented, according to Niebauer, by the teachings of Eckhardt Tolle and Alan Watts. I was not familiar with Watts, but I've read Tolle who is not a scientist, but a popular spokesman for the "new consciousness," professing that the "illusory sense of self" or the "egoic self" interferes with our desire to reach consciousness. This is also part of the Buddhist tradition, however, Buddhism, as I recall, attempts to go beyond the personal "self" in order to reach a "higher" self.

I enjoyed the author's lively style of writing including an abundance of references to his children and their innate right-brain tendencies to answer a question with a non-interpretive "verb" answer (also termed the "how") as opposed to our adult, more cautious approach to stimuli called the "noun" or the "what" response. (I interpreted this to be relevant because verbs are action-oriented; nouns are static). Children have not fully developed their "pattern perceivers" and therefore can speak "Zenfully;" ie, without placing things in categories (a left-brain trait).

It was the Zen-fullness that I missed most about the book - a more in depth discussion of the relationship of Eastern philosophies to the ever so subtle change in the scientific community discussed by the author, which allows for the possibility that who we are is not contained in the (physical) brain that dies, but in our consciousness (which might not die at all).

My question, then, is, what is consciousness? Is it that deep sense of awareness encountered by Edgar Mitchell as he rode back to earth from outer space having experienced the utter "connectedness" of the universe? Is consciousness a part of the brain? Or simply that quiet place we all seek through meditation? Is consciousness the "mind?" The "soul?" Is it a void waiting to be filled? According to Niebauer, matter makes up only 5% or .000000000000000000042% in the universe. Then, of what is the rest of the universe made?

Professor Neibauer was able to suggest to me, at least, a conclusion: what I gleaned from the book was that the right brain may ultimately lead us to a state of consciousness to which, I, as a Yoga practitioner and meditation enthusiast, am eager to find. The right-brain (person) is intrepid, a risk taker, a doer; he is action-oriented: he/she is Captain Kirk, while the left-brain may be Dr. Spock, a logical voice of caution; This is the perfect metaphor for me, as the most memorable and revealing moments in my life have been those unthinking explorations into the unknown--a voyage to an undisclosed destination, to "boldly go" where I have never gone before.

4-1/2 stars (a bibliography might have been nice). A provocative read, nonetheless.

Entertaining and--yes--enlightening!
By Dennis Littrell
The title of this book is something of a joke. On one level the book is an elaboration on Michael Gazzaniga's discovery in the 1970s that the verbal left brain "interprets" what the right brain experiences as well as rationalizes or denies any cognitive dissidence that might occur. The left brain tells the story; sometimes the story is true, sometimes it isn't. I am reminded of the title of another popular psychology book recently published entitled, "Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me)" by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson. The subtitle of that book is "Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts." Here Slippery Rock University psychology Professor Chris Niebauer is concerned with the flip side of their thesis, namely the "mistakes" of self-improvement and enlightenment or rather the impossibility of self-improvement and enlightenment.

On another level this book is a kind of tongue-in-cheek dissertation on the Buddhist idea of no-self, although Niebauer uses the term "ego" instead of self. We get a clear hint about Niebauer's satirical intent from the drawing on the cover of a not exactly serene Buddha with his left eye comically popped open as he sits in meditation. The subtitle of the book, "How the Left-brain Plays Unending Games of Self-improvement," highlights the fact that you can't be something or somebody you aren't. If you practice some form of self-improvement and you improve, well you were that person anyway and couldn't have done otherwise. Niebauer's real thesis is there is no such thing as free-will. There is no self; instead we are a collection of neurons and brain modules and flesh, blood and bone that act like swarm intelligence. We think we make decisions but in fact the brain modules come to a swarm consensus and act. We imagine that "we," whoever we might be, made a decision and acted.

Another way to express the subtitle is to realize that what we do most of the time in our lives is rationalize, deny and pretend while imagining that we are acting. Another way of saying this is "We don't do; we are done."

The point about avoiding enlightenment and any kind of self-improvement is part of the joke. To repeat: how can you improve yourself in any way if you do not have free will? Indeed how can you improve yourself when there is no self to improve? And furthermore how can you improve yourself when brain modules are initiating the action, and improvement and enlightenment are illusions. This, by the way, is a very Zen kind of position. No philosophizing, no intellectualizing, no sutras to study and glean. Instead drank water, light fire, cook rice.

In reading the book there is a bit of jargon and some technical vocabulary to get used to such as "law of opposition," "pattern perceiver," "left-brain interpreter," "neural representation," etc. But Niebauer writes well and concretely for the most part (although he needs to work on the typos, missing words and missing apostrophes). I come from part of the tradition that he presents, that of Zen Buddhism, yoga and Taoism, and I'm familiar with the kind of terminology used there but not with that of contemporary psychology which is what Niebauer uses extensively. Instead of his "egoic" self, in Buddhism there is just self, or actually no-self. In yoga there is atman and anatman.

I wonder if part of the reason for some of the obscurity and cuteness of Niebauer's expression is due to the disagreeable fact that few people including the institutions of society want to believe that there is no responsible self and that we do not have free will. It's the kind of awkward truth that is socially and political incorrect since society demands that people be held responsible for their actions.

Now I happened to agree with most of what Niebauer has to say although I express these ideas in a different and more straight-forward way in my book, "The World Is Not as We Think It Is," which naturally I recommend. I also write more tersely than Niebauer although perhaps not as cleverly. Niebauer is writing a symphony on a theme while I'm just interested in the theme.

A strange thing is that I almost didn't read this book. I'm glad I did because it is paradoxically enlightening (despite Professor Niebauer's best efforts!). He reinforced something that I learned some years ago that has given me comfort with, and insight into, the human condition. His "no improvement" mantra strongly suggests that we accept ourselves and reality as they are and live as much as possible in the here and now.

His sometimes inexact expression (at least to my mind) is what at first put me off. Here are four examples of what I mean:

On page one he asserts that the "me" that we are all familiar with doesn't exist in "the way we were taught it does." He adds, "Rather, there is only the thought that it exists."

But I don't think this is correct. Something more than the thought does exist. What doesn't exist is our mistaken idea of the self; however something does exist that we see as the self, and that entity is made of atoms of various elements configured into something we call a human being which of course is part of a larger community and so on.

On page two he writes, "...nothing is really scary or problematic if you are in the now." This makes sense only if we could actually exist in the now, that is in no time. Of course nothing could be scary or problematic since nothing could be discerned at all! In the eternal now there is no movement, no neurons firing, not even the movement of photons of light.

What really threw me off was his "law of invincible opposition." He doesn't define it but he gives many examples of the law at work. When you try not to worry, you worry more; nice people turn out to be nasty, and vice-versa; "if you are a jerk the world loves you. Love the world and one way or another, it will crucify you." (p. 7) I think this "law" is far from universal and is indeed false for most people.

In another example he asks on page 49 "whether the images in a movie are in the film or rather on the screen..." and answers ..."neither, they only exist when an awareness is watching..." However the images actually do exist independent of an observer. Their patterns of light and darkness can affect molecules in the air however minutely. What he should be saying I believe is that the interpretation of the light patterns toward some kind of recognizable meaning such as people walking on a beach or trains being blown up, etc. is in the mind of the observer.

This way of writing is probably just hurried or perhaps Niebauer is being cute. I can remind him that the left- brain interpreter is just an artificial abstraction, but that would not mean that it doesn't refer to something real. What is real is the behavior of the neurons and modules in the left brain that direct us toward certain behaviors while avoiding others. Call it what you will. I call it left-brain module swarm intelligence (or sometimes lack thereof).

Some other issues and insights:

"Categorized" means in the context of this book and in Niebauer's thought the opposite of a continuously, inter-connected reality. Realizing that everything is "one" is the opposite of seeing "categories" or differentiations. Categories are parts. They are things. They are nouns. Reality, which we can never experience directly, is infinitely connected. Reality is an event. Reality is a verb. We only experience a representation of reality as presented by our senses processed by our brains and nervous system.

In the chapter entitled "Myths as Grand Patterns across Time," Niebauer talks about living in the moment without thinking about the past or the future. He notes, "Unless you are in physical pain, it is likely that your response will be nothing is wrong...There is nothing to fix, nothing to work on nothing to attain, no grail to search for and no place to go." He adds, "In this practice we can experience the stillness of things being fine as they are." (p. 59)

This is true, although not so easy to attain; in fact, what I find especially interesting is the fact that earlier in the book Niebauer writes that he failed at meditation or "didn't get anything out of it" (p. 2) not realizing that the stillness of living in the moment is what meditation is all about, and in experiencing the pure moment without fear or pain or any kind of urgency, one experiences the bliss. The trick is to actually be aware of what you are experiencing and to stay in the moment.

Here's a nice one: Niebauer mentions a "jerk" in front of you "going too slow." (Precursor to road rage?) Then he asks, "Can you see it is just the universe dancing?" Ah, yes, we all need to just see the pure perception without any complaining, which brings me to this thought: Reading the chapter entitled "A Day Without Complaints" might lead to some good personal psychology, no complaining--maybe even self-improvement and enlightenment!

A Nondual Exploration of Consciousness
By Cynthia Sue Larson
If you've noticed how your favorite experiences are filled with more "how-ness" of sensory experience and being-ness than "what-ness" of checking things off your to-do list, and wondered what's up with that, this book helps explain why. You can savor looking out the windows of a car or train at the scenery outside much better if you're not asking or being asked every couple of minutes, "Are we there yet?" and essentially this is the premise behind the seemingly contradictory title of this book. Cognitive neuropsychologist Chris Neibauer explores consciousness without categorical thinking in "The Neurotic's Guide to Enlightenment," blending science and mysticism, as he integrates the works of Alan Watts and Eckhart Tolle into current findings from recent discoveries in neuroscience.

The key to the magic in this book comes experiencing the sense of exhilarating playfulness that naturally arises from thinking beyond dualities, completely free from categories of any kind. If you're wondering how a book on consciousness can sidestep categories, think of the Zen koan in which a Zen master asks a student to imagine the sound of one hand clapping. There is a long tradition in Eastern philosophy of recognizing the complementary role of nothingness to somethingness, which appears in the Yin/Yang symbols and is part of most every aspect of eastern art, literature, philosophy and thought.

There is a common assumption in the West that to be conscious (literally to "know with") implies a self, and that being conscious is to be a self that knows... yet what we can learn from such a narrowly constrained viewpoint is restricted from the start. I absolutely LOVE the way this book points out right from the start that "psychology is dead" in the sense that psychology has overlooked the role of the interpreter, as it presumes that all that need be examined in order to understand consciousness is that part of the mind and brain that reasons, analyzes, and makes sequential choices. There is a "category error" of epic proportion however, when presuming that by studying that which reasons and categorizes, we are seeing all of consciousness there is. You can think of this as a kind of mapping error, in which we look for our lost keys under the streetlight, since that is the only place bright enough to look. Even when most western scientists know that the map is not the territory, and that the brain is not the mind... they do not, for the most part, embody the Kirk-ness of recognizing that the "what-ness" brain makes a far better servant to the "how-ness" mind than master.

"The Neurotic's Guide to Enlightenment" contains many exercises that explore consciousness beyond dualistic categories, which are designed to present ambiguities that may slow or frustrate the categorical "what-ness" interpretive mind, in order to experience the "how-ness" holistic mind. Readers not already familiar with Eastern meditation may feel frustrated by this approach, but those open-minded enough to trust the process can be richly rewarded by experiencing a much greater sense of present moment satisfaction.

I experience a dream-like sense of living a waking dream while reading this book that I greatly treasure. I love the concept presented in this book that some individuals, such as Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirk, live their lives from a "how-ness" frame of mind, in which they naturally engage with the world experientially in the present moment, free from most of the (unnecessarily restrictive) constraints that most others impose based on categorizations and expectations. Those who live so freely can seem to enjoy lives of amazing good fortune, constantly enjoying "beginner's luck" because they constantly enjoy "beginner mind."

I love the journey this book takes me on, as I trust the author to guide me to a place of knowingness beyond assumptions and beliefs about how things "should be" or "really are." There is an exquisite beauty in recognizing that right here, right now, everything is fine... and that we can see past the distortions of the interpretive mind. When we identify with a sense of self beyond that which we previously thought we were, we can enjoy life with less struggle and greater happiness, naturally. And sometimes, we can reach this state of blissful awareness when we stop trying so hard to determine if we're there yet.

Happy BC/SWL listener...
By Howard H. Ragan
I have been using the WRTH since 1957... I have used it around the world in my travels with the USAF. I buy one every year just to keep up with the shortwave and Broadcast Radio stations. It is extremely handy for chasing down latest addresses.

I am a Ham... K7ATU, WRTH comes in handy when tracking down SW Stations that could interfere with Ham Band frequencies.

The WRTH is one book I will always have ready in the shack, and I will buy a new one each year. This year, I got my 2016 Edition on the 4th of January this year!... Color me impressed.

Not as hefty as it used to be and unfortunately not as many station stories as in the past, but still the ultimate reference guide for LW/MW/SW/FM DXing and listening. Still the best after all these years!

Essential reference book for short wave listening
By Dan
I listen to international short wave radio broadcasts every day. WRTH provides information that cannot be found elsewhere. It's a great supplement to online resources like Short-Wave.info. Lists station address, frequencies, times in UTC, power, target areas, etc. Updates for A16 schedules will be offered as free downloads online.

Under Pressure: Cooking Sous Vide (The Thomas Keller Library), by Thomas Keller

A revolution in cooking

Sous vide is the culinary innovation that has everyone in the food world talking. In this revolutionary new cookbook, Thomas Keller, America's most respected chef, explains why this foolproof technique, which involves cooking at precise temperatures below simmering, yields results that other culinary methods cannot. For the first time, one can achieve short ribs that are meltingly tender even when cooked medium rare. Fish, which has a small window of doneness, is easier to finesse, and shellfish stays succulent no matter how long it's been on the stove. Fruit and vegetables benefit, too, retaining color and flavor while undergoing remarkable transformations in texture.

The secret to sous vide is in discovering the precise amount of heat required to achieve the most sublime results. Through years of trial and error, Keller and his chefs de cuisine have blazed the trail to perfection—and they show the way in this collection of never-before-published recipes from his landmark restaurants—The French Laundry in Napa Valley and per se in New York. With an introduction by the eminent food-science writer Harold McGee, and artful photography by Deborah Jones, who photographed Keller's best-selling The French Laundry Cookbook, this book will be a must for every culinary professional and anyone who wants to up the ante and experience food at the highest level.

Amazon.com Review
The ground-breaking under-pressure method, usually called sous vide, involves submerging food for minutes or even days in sealed, airless bags at precisely the temperature required to produce perfect doneness. Flavors and textures unattainable by other cooking methods can also be achieved.

The technique has been in the pipeline for awhile--one forerunner is the boil-in bag mom used to put veggies on the table--but has only recently attracted top chefs. One is Thomas Keller, famed chef-proprietor of The French Laundry and Per Se. His mightily sized, gorgeously produced Under Pressure explores every inch of sous vide, including the ramifications of using this precision-cooking technique (once time and temperature are established, best results follow automatically) on the craft of cooking, which has always meant a potentially rewarding engagement with the possibility of failure.

The book makes no bones about being addressed to professionals. Typical recipes, like Marinated Toy Box Tomatoes with Compressed Cucumber-Red Onion Relish, Toasted Brioche, and Diane St. Claire Butter, involve multiple preparations and dernier cri ingredients, and thus resist home duplication. There’s also the matter of the pricey equipment required--chamber vacuum packers and temperature-maintaining immersion circulators--not to mention the precautions required to ensure that foods, usually cooked at low temps, are safe to eat.

What the book does offer the home cook is, however, thrilling. It introduces something new under the sun--an exciting, transformative technique of great potential. Anyone interested in food and cooking--not to mention lovers of extraordinarily well produced books--will want to explore Under Pressure. --Arthur Boehm

From Publishers Weekly
The origins of sous vide cooking, or vacuum-packing foods and cooking them at precise, relatively low temperatures for long periods, may have been largely in frozen convenience foods, but it has become standard in top kitchens worldwide, notably Kellers own. Now, Keller aims to demonstrate the technique to a wider swath of cooks—not the masses, but at least those who can afford this lavish volume and the sous vide equipment. One need not cook the exact recipes (which are unaltered from the restaurants) to be inspired by Kellers careful yet whimsical creations, such as a cuttlefish tagliatelle with palm hearts and nectarine or squab with piquillo peppers, marcona almonds, fennel and date sauce. And Keller, with several of his chefs as well as curious cook Harold McGee, takes pains in the introduction to explain sous vide fundamentals, arguing persuasively that it is not a fad but an important technique that allows unparalleled control over how ingredients are heated and what flavors and textures result. Still, at least until the equipment is more affordable, most readers will admire this gorgeous book on their coffee tables, from the simple beauty of photos of ingredients in their natural states to plates with a courses elements so artfully arranged they would not be out of place in a modern art museum. From the Inside Flap
"Under Pressure," writes Harold McGee in his introduction to this, the first book written in English on cooking sous vide, introduces cooks to one of the most important culinary innovations of modern times.
An uncommonly grand claim coming from so precise a scientist and writer, but such is the power of this controversial method. Thomas Keller and his chefs, McGee continues, illustrate the powers of precision heating with dozens of dishes that wouldn t be as fine, or even conceivable, without it.
Sous vide method comprises a group of techniques that allows the cook to realize flavors and textures that no other cooking method can. By sealing food in plastic and submerging it at exact temperatures for minutes or for days food that is traditionally braised, sauteed, roasted, or poached we can attain astonishing results. The tough cuts of meat we once braised in simmering stock can now be cooked sous vide to a medium-rare pink, juicy and meltingly tender. Lamb loin, veal tenderloin, and other larger cuts of meat, difficult to cook evenly, emerge uniform throughout. Delicate fish is enhanced and the margin of error reduced. Vegetables and fruits, cooked in an oxygen-free environment, remain vividly colored. And, because the food is sealed in plastic, its flavor is never lost to the cooking water or the atmosphere. Carrots taste more like carrots, apples more like apples. Small amounts of herbs and other aromatics can have dramatic effects. Cold techniques are valuable as well. Marinades used with meats "en sous vide "are powerfully effective. Various fruits and vegetables, such as melons, cucumbers, and pineapple, become new when compressed.
"Under Pressure: Cooking Sous Vide "is an invaluable contribution to our culinary world at a time of unprecedented interest in food and cooking, both in the restaurant kitchen and at home. The most critical aspect of sous vide lies in discovering what combination of time and temperature achieves the most sublime results. The answers, as discovered and practiced during the past decade by the chefs of The French Laundry and per se, two of the most respected restaurants in the world, are all here, within the innovative recipes from Keller s landmark restaurants.
"Under Pressure "is a source of instruction, technique, and recipes for anyone who wants to experience the new ideas sous vide makes possible, inspiration for what is possible and what might be.

An instant classic, but not for everyone
By Charleston Dave
This cookbook is a mirror into the reader's own attitude toward cooking.

If you are a professional with all the expensive equipment, a demanding clientele and a pioneering spirit, this book will quickly become an essential reference. If you are a casual home cook curious about sous vide wizardry and perhaps interested in toying with the techniques, you will find this book intimidating and useless. For foodies who have been intrigued by "molecular gastronomy" restaurant offerings, this book may answer a few "How did they do that?" questions. Given the level of creative energy between this book's covers, it is an outstanding value for the listed Amazon price. Understand, however, that as Keller states on p. 38, this book is

"written for the professional kitchen, from one chef to another. No modifications have been made
to accommodate cooks preparing [these recipes] at home, even though some of them certainly can
be done at home with the right equipment"

Recipe mise-en-place is organized by component in a division-of-labor professional kitchen style (not chronologically). All recipes use metric weights, so a digital scale is essential. These stylistic choices are sensible for Keller's audience, but may be offputting to a home cook more familiar with traditional American home cookbook presentations.

Sous vide is, in important ways, both easier and safer than other cooking methods. Some of the advantages include ultra-precise control (and corresponding prevention of cooking errors and waste), extended hold times, intensified flavor, more efficient usage of labor, space and ingredients, and the ability to accomplish certain end results that are impossible with any other approach. Romantics who complain that sous vide reduces the artistry of cooking are ignoring the subjective, analog, soulful decisions that the chef must make concerning ingredients and method before and after bag cooking. In an introductory essay, Keller considers the sense of loss at the diminution of artisanal craft as technology supplants it. This was great writing, truly an artist at his best.

One minor complaint I have with the book is its layout. Too many pictures of serious chefs at work are uncaptioned. Who am I looking at? What am I supposed to learn from this picture? Photos of finished recipes are often a page or two away from the recipe or even from their own caption. There are also artsy "backstage" pictures mixed in, producing a momentary confusion as to what one is contemplating. This is perhaps illustrative of the tone of the book. It's assumed that the reader is going to have the culinary chops to recognize these people (or ones like them) and fit right in next to them cooking obscure ingredients comfortably in a professional setting. Perhaps the effect sought is a coffee table book for professional chefs. I was also a bit disappointed with the layout's trendy approach of having more empty space (big white margins) bordering smaller, lighter type. Bring your reading glasses and good light when you sit down with this text.

Following introductions on philosophy, science and history by Bruno Goussault, Harold McGee, Keller, Jonathan Benno, Corey Lee and Sebastien Rouxel, there in an extended section on Fundamentals, including what sous vide can achieve, basic principles and techniques, safety, use in the professional kitchen, and use in the home kitchen. I found the section on food safety to be particularly valuable and accessible to the home cook.

Over sixty recipes are roughly equally divided into five major categories: Vegetables and Fruits, Fish and Shellfish, Poultry and Meat, Variety Meats, and Cheese and Desserts. Perplexingly, the table of contents lists only these categories and does not itemize the individual recipes. Each recipe generally takes two to three pages, plus a full-page photograph, and involves two or three dozen ingredients, divided into dish components (remember these are complex, composed dishes offered in Keller's restaurants, The French Laundry and per se). An example? "Grilled Octopus Tentacles, Chorizo, Fingerling Potatoes, Green Almonds and Salsa Verde," has 30 ingredients, two pages of instructions including a procedure for peeling green almonds, recipe p. 78-79, photo p. 76, two citations for sources, and one procedural reference to the Basics section. Similarly, "Dégustation de Porcelet, Rutabage Mostarda, Wilted Mustard Greens, and Potato 'Mille-Feuille'" is a tasting of five cuts from a baby pig; this recipe stretches four pages and lists 45 ingredients. The "Basics" section follows the recipes and includes everything from how to make clarified butter to recipes for eight different kinds of stock. Few home cooks are likely to make the composed dishes in their entirety, but experienced or adventuresome readers will certainly come away with ideas for home entertaining or approaches that might prepare only one simplified element from a Keller composed plate. Perhaps you would offer home guests five cuts from a baby pig; weeknight visitors to my home would more likely get pork chops sous-vided à la Keller, with one sauce.

Other than the chapter on safety, perhaps the most useful parts for home sous vide users will be the two closing reference sections. First, there is a marvelous table that lists ingredients alphabetically, specifies how to sous vide the ingredient, and cites a recipe within the text that features the ingredient. Next comes an extended list of sources for equipment and ingredients. This is followed by a more traditional index, then acknowledgements and restaurant staff group photos, for a text of almost 300 pages.

The only comparable text to address the topic of sous vide is Joan Roca's "Sous Vide Cuisine." Roca's text is stylistically quite different and more than a third shorter than Keller's book. The English translation of Roca's book also runs about two hundred dollars, which is quadruple the price of Keller's book. If you can choose only one, Keller's is stronger and a better value.

It's not all things to all people, but "Under Pressure: Cooking Sous Vide" is invaluable in what it offers and an instant classic in its field.

A beautiful book but not that helpful for the amateur

This book is not written or intended for the home cook. I knew that much from the reviews before I ordered it. Still, I thought I could glean some useful information from it that would be helpful in the home setting. I've been cooking sous vide for a little over a year. I mainly sous vide proteins. I've done beef tenderloin, sirloin, burger, scallops, lobster, chicken, brisket, prime rib and pork butt. I was hoping to get some solid data on cooking times and temperatures. The information on the Internet is all over the place when it comes to sous vide. This book has a couple of pages of temperature and time recommendations for specific dishes which I did not find that helpful, mainly because they were for dishes I would never prepare. If you are making foie gras, ox cheek, beef tongue, or lamb heart you may find these numbers useful. There are also sirloin and chicken settings, but don't buy this book if you are looking for basics.

This is a beautiful book with illustrations and recipes for dishes from a top chef. I would recommend it for those interested in fine dining and for professionals who aren't doing sous vide in their restaurants. Perhaps a highly skilled home chef could also expand their repertoire with this book. I wish I was in that category.

You'll never settle for ordinary cooking ever again-professional tasters, you've found your ultimate euphoria in this chefs book
By nevada1/2rack
A smorgasbord of recipes ranging from the exotic to the ordinary, the decadently overwhelming to the commonly healthy, all cooked without anything other than an everyday sealable food bag. You will have to print up a metric to English standard weight table in some instances though, but it's very well worth it. The science behind it is all there, as well as an excellent compendium of culinary experts to guide you through the steps to a better way to prepare your meals. Prepare your palate for a paradigm shift for the better!!!!

My only complaint-why did it take so long to make its way here to the US!!?!??

Bravery and sacrifice for the Emporer.
By Chip Hunter
This black and white graphic novel is comprised of about 20 individual and unrelated short stories from various Warhammer authors and artists. A wide variety of characters experiencing carnage and intense battles are found here, with space marines and guardsmen fighting chaos, orks, and tau. The overriding theme of the stories is the necessity and willingness of Imperial soldiers to sacrifce themselves for the good of the Imperium. Bravery and selflessness in the face of terror carries the day here.

Highly recommended for fans of Warhammer graphic art.

A GREAT COLLECTION OF STORIES
By Tim Janson
Flames of Damnation is a manga-sized, black and white graphic novel showcasing the talents of numerous artists and writers in a collection of two dozen stories set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The first thing that stands out about this 224 page book is the uniform quality of the art. From the first page to the last, the art is outstanding. While some are certainly better than others, I can say with all honesty that there is no weak jobs in the book. That's quite an accomplishment considering the number of different people working on the book. The stories range in page count from 6 to 12 pages or so and are culled from the pages of Warhammer monthly. This is kind of a bash book as the stories are not connected in anyway but are just different, small slices of the Warhammer 40,000 milieu.

A few of my favorite stories in the book included: "Single Combat" written by veteran WH scribe Dan Abnett with phenomenal art by Kevin Hopgood, telling the tale of the last two combatant survivors on a war torn planet and their final battle to the death.

"Zero Option" is another great Abnett story with art by David Pugh. In this story, a lone company of imperial guards mans a lonely outpost on a frozen planet, waiting desperately for help to arrive and holding off the hordes of chaos. At the end we see the fateful means in which they go to survive.

"Predator and Prey" is about a primitive plant on the fringe of the empire. It's native inhabitants, alien tribesmen find themselves in a hunt and struggle with a chaos demon and hoping that the great empire will eventually come to their aid...but reality for this world is much different.

Writer Gordon Rennie and Artist Karl Richardson submit "Last Stand on Yayor" about the desperate struggle of the inhabitants of this planet against hordes of zombie plague infested armies. The Confessor of Agriworld is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice.

In "Black Bone Road", a rogue Psyker is causing a malignant influence on the populace of a planet that even the Space Marines are challenged to stop. Story by Graham McNeill and art by John Standing.

A very well done collection of stories that is great for relative newbies to the Warhammer 40,000 world as it serves as action-jammed indoctrination without getting too far in depth. Awesome!

W40K Comic Novel
By Detra Fitch
Here is a collection of Warhammer 40,000 tales that prove the courage and raw determination of the mighty Space Marines and Imperial Guardsmen. They hunt down and destroy all the enemies of mankind. They crush all invading greenskin (orks) hordes and lay waste to all the horrible forces of Chaos.

**** I found only a few flaws. Most readers either will not notice the errors or simply not care since they are so minor. Yet I could not help but wonder how an ork would know what "playing chicken" even meant. Otherwise, Warhammer 40,000 fans will love the non-stop battles described within these stories ... whether the humans win or lose. ****

Scandalous (The Finn Factor Book 2), by R.G. Alexander

From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author R.G. Alexander

Will it be Scandalous?

If Natasha Rivera is involved, the answer is usually yes. The owner of The Twisted Tart bakery has never been shy about expressing her opinions or her desires. The only secret she ever kept had to do with her feelings for a certain Finn and the details of their unusual relationship.

When reformed bad boy Senator Stephen Finn asks Natasha to join him for a week of political intrigue and kink, there’s no way she can say no. Nothing has changed. His star is still on the rise and she is still too wild to be tamed. Once they get their hands on each other they’re bound to cause a scandal…but it might just be worth it.

Recipe of Warning: Take one outspoken, sexually confident woman and a repressed former bad boy. Combine until sparks fly. Add voyeurism, exhibitionism, spanking, excessive quantities of explicit sex, a kinky house party and whatever pervertible you have on hand…thoroughly shake the mixture until your wrists hurt or your batteries run low. Mmmm. Yummy warning.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!
By DiDi - Guilty Pleasures BR
4.75 Stars

I have been a huge fan of RG Alexander since I bought my first kindle many moons ago. Every book she has written has pulled me in deep, but this new series has taken a hold of my heart. I think in my humble opinion this is some of her best work, and that is saying a lot, because it is all phenomenal. The Finn siblings are special, but hardheaded.

Stephen just might be the most stubborn of them all. He is determined to overcome his troubled teenage years by going in the exact opposite of that. He is down right the model citizen now. His house is perfect, his carrier as a senator is perfect, and he is the most eligible bachelor. He has one not so secret weakness, Tasha. When his sister’s ex-boyfriend failed miserably at blackmailing him and his siblings, his big secret came out into the light, and he told Tasha they had to have a serious talk. Six months later he summons her to him, but not for the talk she has been wanting and dreading at the same time. Can her heart and his survive the plan he needs her for?

I absolutely love Tasha!!! She is a sexually charged spitfire, and doesn’t apologies for it. She has a huge heart she hides behind her sexuality and humor. In some ways she is more fascinating than Stephen, and he has me by he heart! I love how she almost dares him to indulge in the dominant side she can sense in him, and ohhhh what a dark and twisty rabbit hole that leads them down. The chemistry between these two is an all-consuming inferno, and they just about melted the e-reader from my hands. I loved reading about a Dom learning his way through his deepest desires, and seeing him bring out the submissive brat in this switch-y girl. I can’t recommend this book and series more. Y’all should snatch it up today!!!!!!!!!

Senator Stephan you naughty naughty man
By Iris Pross
We first meet Stephan Finn in his brother Owen's book, Curious. The second Stephan first strolls on to the scene you know there is something special about him. His quiet cool persona remains unruffled when those around him are at a panic. This let me assure you is unnatural in an Irish household. But the stoic Senator isn't just cool and collected, he's also a very patient man. And he may need every bit of that patience to convince Tasha to give them a chance.

I love Tasha! She is who she is and she makes no apologies for it or for her shady family. She regrets that because of who she is she can't ever be with the man she loves, but she's not willing to change who she is for anyone. Even for a man who makes her panties melt at a smoldering look form those gorgeous blue eyes of his.

A definite must read! A huge thank you to Ken Tanaka, and I hope Brady doesn't give you too much a run for your money.

Scandalously Amazing!
By Gail Siuba
Natasha (Tasha) and Stephen's story is better (if possible) then the first book in the series 'Curious' and it was a '5' star read for me! R. G. Alexander's story telling always grabs me and pulls me right into the story, every single time!
'Scandalous' is the second in the Finn Factor series.
Natasha has loved Stephen since she was sixteen. Tasha is a free spirit, part of the BDSM world and likes it that way. Always afraid to admit (to herself) she had strong feelings for Stephen, she kept him at arm's length. Stephen has harbored his feelings for Natasha as well. Stephen is a young up and coming Senator with a squeaky clean reputation. These are two stubborn, complicated people who will do anything for their friends and family.
Stephen enlists Tasha's help in a plan to take down a corrupt newspaper magnet that is blackmailing his way up the government chain. Stephen & Tasha find that the charade they have entered isn't a charade at all. Long buried feelings are being exposed , and the potential for a broken heart(s) is on the table. When faced with threats to take down the good Senator, Tasha does the one thing she doesn't want to do...
This book will have you laughing, and crying as you watch this relationship go through love, hell and back.
