About the Author

Charles Edward Reynolds was born in 1900 and received his education at Tiffin Boys School, Kingston-on-Thames, and Battersea Polytechnic. After some years with Sir William Arroll, BRC and Simon Carves, he joined Leslie Turner and Partners, and later C W Glover and Partners. He was for some years Technical Editor of Concrete Publications Ltd and then became its Managing Editor, combining this post with private practice. In addition to the Reinforced Concrete Designer’s Handbook, of which almost 200, 000 copies have been sold since it first appeared in 1932, Charles Reynolds was the author of numerous other books, papers and articles concerning concrete and allied subjects. Among his various professional appointments, he served on the council of the Junior Institution of Engineers, and was the Honorary Editor of its journal at his death on Christmas Day 1971.

James Cyril Steedman was educated at Varndean Grammar School and first employed by British Rail, whom he joined in 1950 at the age of 16. In 1956 he began working for GKN Reinforcements Ltd and later moved to Malcolm Glover and Partners. His association with Charles Reynolds began when, after the publication of numerous articles in the magazine Concrete and Constructional Engineering, he accepted an appointment as Technical Editor of Concrete Publications, a post he held for seven years. He then continued in private practice, combining work for the Publications Division of the Cement and Concrete Association with his own writing and other activities. In 1981 he set up Jacys Computing Services, subsequently devoting much of his time to the development of micro-computer software for reinforced concrete design. He is the joint author, with Charles Reynolds, of Examples of the Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings to BS 8110.

Anthony John Threlfall was educated at Liverpool Institute for Boys after which he studied civil engineering at Liverpool University. After eight years working for BRC, Pierhead Ltd, and IDC Ltd, he took a diploma course in concrete structures and technology at Imperial College. For the next four years he worked for CEGB and Camus Ltd, and then joined the Cement and Concrete Association in 1970, where he was engaged primarily in education and training activities until 1993. After leaving the C&CA, he has continued in private practice to provide training in reinforced and prestressed concrete design and detailing.

I owned a reynold's 10th edition, and i'm still using the older version more often. Because the orientation for the 11th is different than 10th, so it's a bit hard to locate the content that i'm used to on older version.

Estela Canto's Translation of "Sodoma y Gomorra"

This new translation to Spanish of Proust's fourth volume was made by Estela Canto, who once received a proposal of marriage from Jorge Luis Borges. Although her version reflects to some extent the Argentine dialect, Canto avoided the obvious regionalisms for which the previous Argentine translator of Proust, Marcelo Menasch�, was so criticized. As in the case of the other translations of "Sodoma y Gomorra", Canto's version provides for the Spanish reader Proust's groundbreaking text about same-sex relations, the Dreyfus Affair and his characteristic themes of society, love and art.

The Mendesian Nome is one of the very few Deltaic zones documented by a significant number of papyri. To date, this documentation has never been subject to a comprehensive study. Yet it provides us with a wealth of information on the region's landscape, administrative geography, and agrarian economy. Starting from these papyri and from all available evidence, this volume investigates the complex networks of relationships between Mendesian environments, socio-economic dynamics, and agro-fiscal policies. Ultimately, it poses the question of the 'otherness' of the Nile Delta, within Egypt and, more broadly, the Roman Empire. Section I sets the broader hydrological, documentary, and historical contexts from which the Roman-period Mendesian evidence stem. Section II is dedicated to the reconstruction of the Mendesian landscape, while section III examines the strategies of diversification and the modes of valorization of marginal land attested in the nome. Finally, section IV analyses the socio-environmental crisis that affected the nome in the second half of the second century AD.

A well told witchy tale with a light touch

This is a smooth, well told and enjoyable tale, leading into a series that, in book two, gets even better.

Stories of paranormal detectives solving murders have become their own genre, I guess. Unfortunately, it's attracted altogether too many self-published, probably mostly quite young novelists who can't write very well. They're full of daydreams with no life experience behind them, and it shows. It's why successful writers cringe at their early work.

Such amateur genre books are easy to spot - they're full of typos and flat-out misuse of the language, and they always drive me away early. No sense wasting time on a book that makes you cringe. Really - have none of these writers heard of editors? Editors do exist and they do tend to catch logical errors and fix simple mistakes.

Then you come across a book that makes digging through the literary dumpsters worth the time because of simple storytelling skill. The Wendy Lightower series rises several levels above its competition simply by the skill of the narrative. It's a light, enjoyable series full of familiar tropes - young female trying to escape the family's magic tradition by taking a mundane job; a hunky male who keeps almost charming her pants off, there being in this case a literal spark between Him and Her; a second hunky male representing wealth and power who keeps almost drawing her away from the first one; a villain who may or may not be innately evil but who wreaks havoc on sundry victims, not all of them very sympathetic; a best friend who is notably beautiful but wishes she were not and compensates by being tough as nails, a fine foil for our heroine (who is also beautiful but doesn't recognize it).... you get the drift.

Rylands uses these tropes not to prop up a weak story but more as reference points to keep her main character oriented and the plot moving smoothly forward, carrying the reader effortlessly along with it. There's a storytelling talent here that I suspect can't be taught. The main character, Wendy Lightower, never does something so stupid it drops your jaw, such as wander into a clearly dire situation looking for her purse (as in one slush-pile book just before I put it down).

Everything Wendy does makes sense from her point of view, events confuse her when appropriate, and the reader is never at a loss to understand her motives. The mystery gets solved, the paranormal is never overplayed, and the characters are believable within the framework of their paranormal universe. It all just kind of flows along, following its own logic. Done well, it looks easy - but not that many writers can actually pull it off. A treat to read.

Actually, I liked this book well enough that I bought the second book in the series (Bell, Book and Murder) and enjoyed that one even more. The tropes became a bit more energized, so to speak, and the action a bit more compelling. Maybe I just mean it improved on the first one in the way it built to a climax, with an ending that the character careened into with little or no control but an utterly believable sense of urgency. This is a writer who knows how to build on experience. The characters grow and develop as the stories go forward - it's always a pleasure when a writer can make that happen.

I was impressed enough to preorder the third book in the series, scheduled in 2015. I don't often do that, but I simply find this series immensely appealing. Why risk missing the next one?

Now for the deducted star. Did I mention I wish writers self-publishing in the Kindle marketplace would find an editor? Rylands clearly used care in putting together this book and the next; they are less typo-riddled than most such efforts, though the chapter labeled "EIGTHEEN" in the second book drew a smile. Hey, these things happen. No big deal, though an editor probably would have noticed.

But no writers can catch their own personal writing "tics" and moderate them; it takes an editor to do that, using a second pair of eyes. For example, Rylands repeatedly and frequently misuses the word "smirk" to mean, not the dictionary sense of a smug, offensive smile, but any form of smile with a little extra spice. You have to guess whether she maybe means a crooked smile, or an ironic one, or a hovering laugh, or a nascent grin, or affectionate amusement, or... Nope. They're all just smirks. It's a writer's tic and all writers have them.

There are logical errors that a good editor would catch, too. A car lurches forward, throwing its passengers forward rather than back into their seats. It's a common enough mistake by people who think a car always follows a forward lurch with sudden deceleration, which is true mostly in Driver's Ed. A decently skilled editor would have suggested ways around such a silly mistake.

There are other such mistakes but these tales have such a light touch the errors didn't annoy me enough to put down the book. It wouldn't surprise me if Rylands smiles (not smirks) a lot. Still, professional writers need to know better than to publish without an editor. I hope Rylands finds one soon, because these tales are so enjoyable, I'd love to give the next one that fifth star.

If you're in the mood for a story that will carry you right along without any pretense of Heavy Significance and no fixation on food or violent action simply to prove how tough the heroine is... - maybe you want a light read on a long plane flight, or you're simply tired of TV and want to voice some appealing characters yourself, in your head - this series may be just ticket. It was for me.

Engaging

Although mystery is not my first choice of genre, I tried this book on a free promo and found it pleasantly engaging. The characters are well-defined and the story has enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. Because this is book one of a series, it did not have a completely satisfying end to it, instead leaving the relationship issues to be continued in the next book. For that reason, it felt a tiny bit unfinished to me, but was still enjoyable enough.

simplistic but amusing

This was cute but a little on the slow side. While I never quite achieved boredom, it never grabbed me either. The murderer was obvious from the beginning, though thankfully not as obvious as the red herrings might have been. Unfortunately, even they were so obvious as to be too obvious and therefore easily dismissible.

The characters were fun but not deeply developed and a little on the clich� side. The outline of a love-triangle felt unsupported and annoying (especially since I couldn't figure out why she even considered one of the men). There was no significant world-building. So, while it was entertaining it all felt very much like fluff.

The writing itself was straightforward, though the occasional abrupt shift in POV was jarring. There did seem to be a need for some further editing. I caught a lot of small mistakes, little things like the 'witch trails' instead of witch trials. Perfectly readable, but also distracting.

All in all, not a bad book but not great either. Kind of a witchy, cozy mystery. I'd read the second if I found it free, but I'm not rushing out to buy it.

"This volume is useful not only for the excellent information and guidance Osti (Univ. of the Arts, Philadelphia) provides but also for the manner in which he presents the information. His presentation of the fundamentals is simple but elegant, and the visuals, examples, and exercises harmoniously supplement the information. Readers can flip to just what they need or study the work as a whole, a flexibility that makes the book valuable as both a textbook and a reference tool. Osti's skills as an artist and instructor are abundantly clear throughout the book, and the many excellent illustrations showcase his credentials well. The market is saturated with books on figure drawing, but human anatomy titles are less numerous, and many are dated. Sarah Simblet’s Anatomy for the Artist (2001) and Valerie Winslow’s Classic Human Anatomy in Motion: The Artist's Guide to the Dynamics of Figure Drawing (2015) are excellent, but what sets Osti’s title apart is its simplicity and the clarity of its prose."

About the Author
Roberto Osti teaches human anatomy for artists at the New York Academy of Art, University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Formally trained as a medical illustrator before becoming a fine artist, Osti has contributed his work to many science and art publications. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in Europe and the United States.

I have poured over countless texts throughout the years with the goal of better understanding the human form

Roberto Osti's Basic Human Anatomy has been an invaluable addition to my library of texts devoted to the study of the human form. As an artist and student, I have poured over countless texts throughout the years with the goal of better understanding the human form. As an educator (I teach figure painting, drawing, and anatomy at Laguna College of Art and Design) I have sought out the most useful methods for teaching artistic anatomy. In my search, I have found few books that exhibit the level of quality exhibited in Osti's Basic Human Anatomy. I believe that Osti has a place among the great names in anatomy education: Robert Beverly Hale, Gottfried Bammes, George Bridgman, Dr. Paul Richer, Elliot Goldfinger, to name a few. As a student at the New York Academy of Art I had the good fortune to attend Osti's anatomy lectures and drawing class. To watch Osti make life-size drawings of the human anatomy while simultaneously delivering his lecture was an incredible experience. All artists should have the opportunity to witness this master in action. Thankfully, he has given us this wonderful text. It has already proved an invaluable addition to my classes.
The book is full of Osti's beautiful depictions of the human form. These masterful drawings alone are worth the price of the book. However, what I find even more valuable is the way that the book is organized. It takes a dense, often daunting subject and leads you through it in a series of easily understood steps. Beginning with the stereometric conception of the body and the structural conception of the skeleton, to the origins and insertions of the muscles, all the way to a discussion of the drawing techniques necessary to implement this knowledge, Osti's book is truly comprehensive.
Two of my favorite aspects of this book are 1. his diagrams on transforming the schematic volumes of the figure into organic forms and 2. his anatomical drawings indicating the muscles on one side and their specific points of origin and insertion on the other.
This book will not only be useful to the novice looking to begin their journey toward understanding the human form, but also to the advanced draftsman looking to augment his or her skill set.

Human Anatomy by Roberto Osti is the best book of anatomy for a person who wants to bring his knowledge of anatomy to the next level. I am physician MD and artist. I have been through many textbooks. But Roberto Osti book will give you a technic that allows you to draw the figure without a model under your eyes. It will give you this ability to draw a realistic and well proportionate figure from your imagination. For the beginner, it is a complete book that gives you clear and easy to access information step by step. Roberto Osti studied illustration for anatomy book at State Institute of Art in Bologna in Italy. He is the author of publications with Natural History Magazine, Scientific American Magazine, Scientific American Mind, Scientific American Explorations, Scientific American Books, Prentice Hall, Scholastic Books, MacGraw Hill, New York Times-Science Times, Wexcards—Progressive Publishing, Oxford University Press, National Academy of Sciences, Houghton-Mifflin, Templeton Foundation, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

I highly recommend Roberto Osti’s Basic Human Anatomy for both students and artists. As a student at the New York Academy of Art, I am currently taking a class with Osti, and in the past, I have used anatomy texts by authors such as Eliot Goldfinger, Dr. Paul Richer and Gottfried Bammes. Osti’s book brings a unique perspective to this field. In a single volume, he combines proportional, structural and organic approaches to create detailed, accurate anatomical drawings. At the same time, he focuses on drawing movements of the body with grace and light with many beautiful illustrations. His book makes anatomy – a complex subject – easy to understand and shows how to integrate it into your drawing practice.
