I have read almost half of this book already and I don't regret buying it AT ALL. Very well-researched, and translated properly from the German. I would buy more books from these authors. I can walk away from this book with a wealth of knowledge and expertise perhaps lacking in some American sources. it was exactly what I ordered, fresh and new, the price was right, and it arrived on time!

Nice reference book on the final battle of World War 2

Why go back and re-read and review a book that was published in 1947? Because it was a very important book back then, and has been used as the template for how to write military history books every since. Not only that, but it has spawned numerous derivative books - by which I mean books that relied on the information contained within it to create other books. This book was published by the U.S. Army and it described the battle for Okinawa against the Japanese in World War 2.

It is a very linear book and relatively dry, in that it described the roughly 90 days of the battles for the island in relatively meticulous detail, from the preparations for its invasion, thought the initial stages, and on to the end of organized combat on the island in the sequence in which it happened. It is dry because it basically mentions which unit fought where, and gives a smidgeon of statistics on the number of American casualties and some statistics about ammunition expenditure rate and the like. On the other hand, it was notable for inserting, here and there, specific combat examples by citing individual soldiers and their activities. This is understood when you are speaking of the exploits of soldiers who later received major commendations (like the Medal of Honor), but this book also includes a few other anecdotes and stories of people who were not necessarily decorated for their efforts.

Notably absent is much reference to the Japanese except for some information on the units that fought there, but almost nothing from the Japanese side. This is not particularly surprising as at the time that this book was published, there was very little information given out by the few Japanese who survived the fighting - the sense of shame that they felt for surviving was too much still to overcome; as well as the fact that the vast majority of Japanese who fought on the island, died as a result of the campaign. Of over 160,000 Japanese soldiers, less than 10,000 survived it.

So, why should this book be read now? Well, as I said, this book became the model for how the U.S. Army wrote its official histories of the second world war. It is notable not only because it documents which unit fought where in substantial detail, but also because this book (and the entire series of official Army histories) do not attempt to whitewash the faults and failures of the U.S. Army. This is not a sanitized version of official history that glorifies that U.S. Army - if talks of the logistical problems and the mistakes made by the high level commanders also. It is sanitized in the sense that it describes the fighting that was going on in a very high level and does not really get into the gore and savagery that was present at the lower levels. There are some hints of this as when an anecdote is told of how a specific Sergeant crept up to a pair of Japanese soldiers and shoots them in the head without giving them any opportunity to surrender, or when a town is described as having the: stench of the dead in the air. But that's it.

A second reason why this book is important is that it became the basis of many other books who relied on the information it contained to flavor its accounts. Many first person accounts published many years later, relied on the information contained in the book to refresh their memories. Also, several recent novels have been published which rely very heavily on this book for the framework of their stories - and even recounting some of the same anecdotes that are told in this book.

So, how should one view this book? I view it as a good reference book to tell me what took place on that island during that campaign and as a good outline of what happened. If I was interested in developing more information about specifics, I would use this book as a guideline and then consult the copious references and notes given to guide my research. Another way to use the book would be to fact check some of the more recent books and articles that claim to explain some aspect of the battle or another. I ended up giving this book a four star rating because of its usefulness, rather than its readability. This is not the kind of book that I can see many people picking up for a leisurely read at the beach! But it is a very useful book nonetheless.

The "Green Books" still right on.

This is one of the Army's "Green Book" series. All of them are very well written but they are geared for the military historian. This is a reprinted copy and dose not contain all of the maps of the the original,which was disappointing.

About the Author
Roxy Peck is Emerita Associate Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and Professor of Statistics Emerita at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. A faculty member at Cal Poly from 1979 until 2009, Roxy served for six years as Chair of the Statistics Department before becoming Associate Dean, a position she held for 13 years. She received an M.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in applied statistics from the University of California, Riverside. Roxy is nationally known in the area of statistics education, and she was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Statistics Education at the U.S. Conference on Teaching Statistics in 2009. In 2003, she received the American Statistical Association's Founder's Award, recognizing her contributions to K-12 and undergraduate statistics education. She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and an elected member of the International Statistics Institute. Roxy served for five years as the Chief Reader for the Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics Exam and has chaired the American Statistical Association's Joint Committee with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics on Curriculum in Statistics and Probability for Grades K-12 and the Section on Statistics Education. In addition to her texts in introductory statistics, Roxy is also co-editor of "Statistical Case Studies: A Collaboration Between Academe and Industry" and a member of the editorial board for "Statistics: A Guide to the Unknown, 4th Edition." Outside the classroom, Roxy likes to travel and spends her spare time reading mystery novels. She also collects Navajo rugs and heads to Arizona and New Mexico whenever she can find the time.

Jay Devore is Professor Emeritus of Statistics at California Polytechnic State University. He earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering Science from the University of California at Berkeley, spent a year at the University of Sheffield in England, and finished his Ph.D. in statistics at Stanford University. Jay previously taught at the University of Florida and at Oberlin College and has had visiting appointments at Stanford, Harvard, the University of Washington, New York University, and Columbia University. From 1998 to 2006, he served as Chair of the Cal Poly Statistics Department. In addition to this book, Jay has written several other widely used statistics texts for engineers and scientists and a book in applied mathematical statistics. He recently coauthored a text in probability and stochastic processes. He is the recipient of a distinguished teaching award from Cal Poly, is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, and has served several terms as an Associate Editor of the "Journal of the American Statistical Association." In his spare time, he enjoys reading, cooking and eating good food, tennis, and travel to faraway places. He is especially proud of his wife, Carol, a retired elementary school teacher, his daughter Allison, who has held several high-level positions in nonprofit organizations in Boston and New York City, and his daughter Teresa, a high school teacher in Brooklyn.

Good Basic Stats

This was a required textbook for a lower level college statistics course. It's a math book, it has numbers, it's boring to read. However, the examples are fairly good, and it supplemented the lectures pretty well. I was able to complete my homework with the help of the examples and practice problems included.

Best of all, it's super cheap because it's an older edition. Don't let professors fool you when it comes to text book editions. Unless you are doing problems directly out of the book for a grade, an older edition will have the same content and be just as helpful and easier on your wallet.

It's a good book. Read it thoroughly. It gives excellent examples with step by step instructions. I was panicking at first, thinking I needed supplemental books to help me learn stats. My advice to you is: STOP!!! Do not do that. They are all a little different, and you are being graded on how this book teaches it. This book truly gives you everything you need. I wish I hadn't wasted all that time and energy with library books and such. Just relax. It's not that bad. I actually loved this class, and I'm a registered nurse, getting ready to go into my MSN program. It's really good. Read it. Read it. Read it.

Decent Stats Book

I purchased this book as a requirement for a college statistics class recently.
Pros:
-Simply written, easy to understand, walks through concepts fairly well
-Lots of worked example problems that help give understanding
-Lots of good figures and graphs
-Great stats tables (z-curves, t-curves, etc.) in the back of the book

Cons:
-The layout of the book was confusing to me I had to jump from chapter to chapter and concepts were introduced after they were talked about in some instances
-Sometimes the authors walk through a concept by only using one example which made it hard for me to apply to situations that were not the exact same

Overall I think this is a pretty good stats book and the older editions are cheap, so that is nice.

31 Spring Designs based on original watercolor artwork by Teresa Goodridge – printed one side of the page

[[VIDEOID:ad3c63753f87c422ce30050d750ee0be]]I own the two previous books in this series by Teresa Goodridge (Winter and Summer) and have found the Spring book to be an improvement over both. While the colored samples are still pictures of the original watercolor artwork rather than colored samples of the actual designs in the book, the problems with the tiny details (especially on faces) is much improved in this book. Details are more finished (less open ended, sketchy type details.) Coloring in it is easier as well as being able to use more types of coloring medium with larger nibs.

The designs are quite lovely with lots of spring themes. There are flowers, birds, outdoor scenes with fun activities like kite flying, walking in the part, riding bicycles, and shopping in an open-air market. The designs are quite detailed and do contain intricate and small areas to color. It is not a book that I would recommend to anyone with fine motor or vision issues.

I noticed that the feel of the paper is slightly rougher than other Creative Haven books I have ordered in this last six months or so. I like the new texture as it is even better for use with colored pencils.

This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium.

The designs are printed one side of the page

Paper is the usual Creative Haven quality: white, medium weight, slightly rough and has perforated pages.

Glue Binding but with perforated pages so removing a page is fairly simple.

The designs stop well before the perforations and each of the designs has a framing line at the outer edge.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through this paper

Water-based markers bleed through in spots and show colorful shadows on the back of the page

Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows of color on the back of the page. India ink pens can bleed through when I apply more than one layer of ink.

Coloring pencils work well with this paper and even better than many of the more recent Creative Haven coloring books I have bought. I was able to get good pigment (color) lay down, layer the same color and multiple colors and to blend easily using a pencil style blender. I tested both oil and wax-based pencils with similar results. Hard lead pencils, like Verithins, leave dents on the back of the page.

I suggest either removing pages from the book to color or using a blotter page under your working page. I like card stock as it keeps ink from seeping through and damaging the pages below.

loving the book

I just received my book today. I love it and can't wait to color the pages. There are 31 pages to color in the book. Out of the 31 pages there are 25 pages that I love. I have a lot of books and normally don't usually have that many pages in the whole book that I want to color. The pictures are on sheet alone. the sheets are easy to tear out. The sheets are thick enough that I will be able to use my sharpies.

A Taste of Spring to color your mood light.

This is a delightful taste of Spring. Some pictures are a bit detailed but most are just what you need to help pull you out of the doldrums. I'm aching for Spring to come and this is helping my mood. Pictures are beautiful and a nice variety of Spring scenes.
