Great intro, bridges the gap between the layman and the novice scholar.
By pwaryuex
I recently purchased this book, and I'm definitely very happy with it. As mentioned, at ~100 pages it's reasonably short, but I don't find this a problem at all. In fact, it being concise means that Schendl really only gives you what you need to know. Something I really dislike is authors who don't highlight important aspects. The author here outlines every single aspect of historical linguistics so that the reader can then build upon their knowledge and move forward in specific areas if they wish.

The book is to the point and very clear. I'm not sure why it has been said that you need familiarity with linguistics; there isn't a linguistic term or idea in the entire book which isn't defined in the glossary or in the paragraph itself. Perhaps previous reviewers haven't noticed the glossary (which, by the way, is immensely helpful as it allows the author to use linguistic terms, but have them defined for you on-hand)?

The bibliography is great in that it's also a brief literature review; all pieces of literature are ranked according to how approachable they are (on a scale of 1-3).

The only criticism I have about the book is its take on diachronic vs synchronic linguistics. Schendl talks a few times about how the two approaches need to be combined, but there's very little evidence of synchronic linguistics being used. That being said, the book is obviously about diachronic linguistics, and there is another book in the series by Spolsky on socio-linguistics, which covers this area.

Plenty of examples from a reasonably wide-range of languages are used, although some may argue that the book focuses perhaps too much on European languages. If you're looking for specific diachronic information on a specific language, this is obviously the wrong place to look. Rather, consult this book if you need an overview of the topic.

I can definitely recommend this book as a starting point - it is a great allround introduction to the topic of diachronic linguistics, definitely give it a go if you're starting out!

What's within is unobjectionable, but too short for the price
By Christopher Culver
Herbert Schendl's HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS, part of the Oxford Introductions to Language Study series, is a concise summary of the main themes of the diachronic study of language. Departing little from other textbooks of historical linguistics, it presents the comparative method, details the process of lexical, morphology and syntactical, and phonological change. Contact phenomena are discussed in one brief chapter, and the book ends with various explanations for why languages change.

Schendl's book is not written for the layman, for his discussion of the topic expects some prior knowledge of general linguistics. However, unlike many introductions to historical linguistics which use the whole Indo-European family as the chief example, Schendl seems to realize not all students of general linguistics are proficient in the ancient languages, and so he uses a large amount of English data which anyone who has read Shakespeare and Chaucer can appreciate. However, with this particular angle I don't think that Schendl's book fulfills any real niche. If one already knows something about linguistics, one could just pick up Hock's magisterial PRINCIPLES OF HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS (The Hague: Mouton de Gruyter, 1991), which costs just a few bucks more and is eight times the size. This tiny guide, barely over a hundred pages, doesn't seem much of a good value in comparison.

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

This is a great book for pre-schoolers and early readers!!!
By A Customer
This series by Margaret Rey is a wonderful introduction for preschoolers to stories with a simple plot line. In Curious George Visits the Zoo, George gets into mischief (which children can always relate to....) but redeems himself in the end by saving a young boy's balloon. In Curious George Visits the Fire Station, George is naughty when he rings the fire alarm, but again shows his better side when he rescues one of the firehouse puppies by climbing UP the firepole. In Curious George and the Pizza, he makes a mess trying his hand at tossing pizza dough into the air, but saves the day when he alone can make a crucial pizza delivery by climbing over a locked gate. Young children enjoy comparing the plots in this series. George is told not to get into trouble, he gets into trouble, then he exonerates himself. Parents, grandparents, teachers and child-care providers will all enjoy this series along with their youngsters!

Beutiful world map!
By a63show
I sent this map to my mother after we discussed the world in general and how she wished she could find some of the places they talk about on the news or that she hears about in movies. I ventured into the realm of map searches and couldn't believe how many there were to choose from. I liked the coloration on this one, so I had it shipped to mom. She loved it! She constantly refers to it and enjoys having that option. Thanks!

Keep Hope Alive
By KAMS
I bought the 2nd edition about 8 years ago. So glad I did. It has come in handy for so many reasons. It has paid for itself 1000 billion times over. Besides using it constantly as a reference for myself, friends, and family, I used the info in that book to help me,along with help of doctors and RM-10 from Garden of Life, save the life of my son who's immune system was very weak after a bone marrow transplant for severe aplastic anemia. He became very ill from the cytomegalovirus and a type of non-hodgkins lymphoma caused by the Ebstein Barr virus (tumors in his lungs, spleen and his digestive tract was infected). His story truly is miraculous.
I have Hepatitis C from a blood infusion over 33 years ago. I have used the information in this book to keep my viral load low and to keep myself as healthy as possible. My liver tests are normal. I just purchased the 3rd edition in Kindle format and I plan on buying the book from the website of KeepHopeAlive.org because I will also be making a small donation to their continued efforts to keep "us" informed.

River Monsters, by Jeremy Wade

I’m Jeremy Wade, biologist and fishing detective. For twenty-five years, I’ve explored our planet’s remotest rivers and lakes, hunting for monster-sized fish. It’s become something of an obsession for me. . . . Called “the greatest angling explorer of his generation” (Independent on Sunday), Jeremy Wade, host of Animal Planet’s wildly popular TV series River Monsters, takes viewers where no wildlife program has gone before, revealing the creatures that lurk in the murky depths of our planet’s inland waterways. Now, Wade goes truly beneath the surface, disclosing full details of how he tracks down and catches each species while also recounting the off-camera highlights of his extraordinary life. From his arrest as a suspected spy in Southeast Asia to a plane crash in the Amazon, every page of River Monsters is packed with adventure. Each chapter unfolds an enthralling detective story, where fishermen’s tales of underwater man-eaters and aquatic killers are subjected to scientific scrutiny. Follow Wade step-by-step as, armed with just a fishing line, he closes in on his prey and separates fact from fiction. From the heart of the Congo, where he wrestles with supernatural goliath tigerfish, to the depths of the Amazon, where the most feared creature is one that could fit in your palm, the results are fish of staggering proportions and terrifying demeanor. Wade also reveals monsters from upcoming episodes, including deadly electric eels, a giant described as a cross between a shark and a chainsaw, and a snake-like beast that truly is the stuff of legend. In the tradition of the most gripping adventure writing, River Monsters shows that there’s more to this world than what’s visible on the surface. As Wade says, with a fishing line anything is possible—sometimes it can even reveal the future, or at least one possible version of it. In similar fashion, Wade’s writings are much more than exhilarating stories: they reveal a vision of the world more awe-inspiring than any individual myth made flesh. Ultimately, River Monsters explores the real mysteries that still exist, capturing the story of one man’s obsession—and his relentless pursuit of the truth.

Wade scours the rivers of the world for the stuff of legend, and we’re lucky enough to bear witness. Jeremy Wade manages to excel as both an angler and a TV host, and now you can add writer. I love the show on Animal Planet and had been searching in vain for the first book he wrote without success so I was thrilled to see this. The book more than met my expectations. I could not put it down. It was fascinating to get more detail on the places he went to earlier, more fish biology, and of course his adventures from his TV program. Part of the reason I like him so much is his stance as a true conservationist and fish lover- the sport comes after he is sure he is doing everything as humanely as possible. I am still not sure if even catch and release fish enjoy the process, but if they are lucky, they will be caught by Jeremy Wade. I also enjoy that he adds details about fish psychology; it's interesting for me (as a non-angler) to read about how fish have different characters and reactions to different kinds of events.

All in all, my only complaint about this book is that it was too short. Another couple hundred pages would have been ideal for me. I hope this book is widely popular and it leads to the reissue of his first book.

River Monsters True Stories..
By Denise Lewis
Let me just start by saying I really didn't want to read this book. I have watched the TV show and find it interesting, but I wasn't all that excited about reading a companion book to the series. Really..we had Unhooked as well..and I was sure this was another way to cash in on the RM series. However, I am glad I decided to read it. It is actually very well written and even quite funny at times. Mr. Wade comes across as down to earth and even a bit self-deprecating at times. It's nice to see someone that actually enjoys what they do and is unjaded by their success(so far).

The House of the Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer

Matteo Alacrn was not born; he was harvested. His DNA came from El Patrn, lord of a country called Opium -- a strip of poppy fields lying between the United States and what was once called Mexico. Matt's first cell split and divided inside a petri dish. Then he was placed in the womb of a cow, where he continued the miraculous journey from embryo to fetus to baby. He is a boy now, but most consider him a monster -- except for El Patrn. El Patrn loves Matt as he loves himself, because Matt is himself.

As Matt struggles to understand his existence, he is threatened by a sinister cast of characters, including El Patrn's power-hungry family, and he is surrounded by a dangerous army of bodyguards. Escape is the only chance Matt has to survive. But escape from the Alacrn Estate is no guarantee of freedom, because Matt is marked by his difference in ways he doesn't even suspect.

Amazon.com Review
Fields of white opium poppies stretch away over the hills, and uniformed workers bend over the rows, harvesting the juice. This is the empire of Matteo Alacran, a feudal drug lord in the country of Opium, which lies between the United States and Aztlan, formerly Mexico. Field work, or any menial tasks, are done by "eejits," humans in whose brains computer chips have been installed to insure docility. Alacran, or El Patron, has lived 140 years with the help of transplants from a series of clones, a common practice among rich men in this world. The intelligence of clones is usually destroyed at birth, but Matt, the latest of Alacran's doubles, has been spared because he belongs to El Patron. He grows up in the family's mansion, alternately caged and despised as an animal and pampered and educated as El Patron's favorite. Gradually he realizes the fate that is in store for him, and with the help of Tam Lin, his bluff and kind Scottish bodyguard, he escapes to Aztlan. There he and other "lost children" are trapped in a more subtle kind of slavery before Matt can return to Opium to take his rightful place and transform his country.

Nancy Farmer, a two-time Newbery honoree, surpasses even her marvelous novel, The Ear, The Eye and the Arm in the breathless action and fascinating characters of The House of the Scorpion. Readers will be reminded of Orson Scott Card's Ender in Matt's persistence and courage in the face of a world that intends to use him for its own purposes, and of Louis Sachar's Holes in the camaraderie of imprisoned boys and the layers of meaning embedded in this irresistibly compelling story. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

From Publishers Weekly
Farmer's (A Girl Named Disaster; The Ear, the Eye and the Arm) novel may be futuristic, but it hits close to home, raising questions of what it means to be human, what is the value of life, and what are the responsibilities of a society. Readers will be hooked from the first page, in which a scientist brings to life one of 36 tiny cells, frozen more than 100 years ago. The result is the protagonist at the novel's center, Matt a clone of El Patron, a powerful drug lord, born Matteo Alacrn to a poor family in a small village in Mexico. El Patro n is ruler of Opium, a country that lies between the United States and Aztln, formerly Mexico; its vast poppy fields are tended by eejits, human beings who attempted to flee Aztln, programmed by a computer chip implanted in their brains. With smooth pacing that steadily gathers momentum, Farmer traces Matt's growing awareness of what being a clone of one of the most powerful and feared men on earth entails. Through the kindness of the only two adults who treat Matt like a human Celia, the cook and Matt's guardian in early childhood, and Tam Lin, El Patron's bodyguard Matt experiences firsthand the evils at work in Opium, and the corruptive power of greed ("When he was young, he made a choice, like a tree does when it decides to grow one way or the other... most of his branches are twisted," Tam Lin tells Matt). The author strikes a masterful balance between Matt's idealism and his intelligence. The novel's close may be rushed, and Tam Lin's fate may be confusing to readers, but Farmer grippingly demonstrates that there are no easy answers. The questions she raises will haunt readers long after the final page. Ages 11-14.

A parent's review: Wow
By Leib Gershon Mitchell
That's all I can say for this book.

I am a parent who has been going through a number of books so that when my sons are of age, I can have a reading list of suitable books for them whose content I am comfortable with. (Books written for adolescents have way too much anguish and sex in them for my [Orthodox Jewish] taste.)

This is one of those books that passes that test. (And I have to say that I was reluctant to give Nancy Farmer a second chance after her AWFUL, babbling book A Girl Named Disaster)

1. The prose is good and at the level of a reasonably intelligent adolescent;
2. The plot is gripping and the book was/ is hard to put down (I finished the whole book in two settings);
3. The character is something that would make sense to an adolescent boy;
4. There are several great topics for discussion, among them:
a. Dystopian societies
b. The Ethics of cloning/ genetic engineering/ stem cell harvesting (said topic can be pared down to an adolescents level and expanded as necessary)
c. Drug use and abuse
d. Questions about what is suffering. (p. 197: "What is suffering but knowledge of suffering?")
5. The book is also, in addition to being on par with the finest dystopian novels (1984 (Signet Classics) and The Giver (Giver Quartet)) and authors (George Orwell) was also two such novels in one. (The character went from one dystopian society to another.)

For the reason that the topics can work for a prescient adolescent, they could be also expanded and put to use for adults.

Verdict: Highly recommended.

Awesome. Loved it.
By Thomas
Great book. There was always a twist around the corner, and the storyline was so great, I ended up reading the second book, which, I loved. There is a wide variety of characters, each with their own unique personalities. Characters such as Tam Lin, Celia, and Mara influence the protqgonist by being caring, thoughtful, and teaching him some sort of important lesson, which is usually given as a hint to what he must do toward the end of the book, which is escape. The story is about how Matt, the clone of a Mexican Drug Lord, is mistreated in the secluded country of Opium, which the Drug Lord owns. The whole country is immune to the horrors of the outside world, holding many extinct species, and pratically taking place in the past due to the Drug Lord's nostalgia. As Matt grows older, he makes new friends, and enemies, and eventually the true purpose of his existence is revealed. This leads to his escape. Overall I thought it was a great book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes anything, because whatever it is, it's on here.

Others have written mostly what I would have said about how the plot is and the quality of the writing so I really can only add that I enjoyed this book and can highly recommend it, no matter your age.

Review

"Relaxed and informal, almost conversational, this writing style makes for comfortable reading that should appeal to everyone while breaking the tension of diving into the complexities of a modern multi-purpose microcontroller."
―Andrew Mason, Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA

"The authors are obviously authorities on the subject, and this shows clearly. The text is clearly written and easy to follow, with examples and analogies used to make understanding easier. Using Keil and the Tiva Launchpad should make it pretty easy to get the examples up and running on an actual Cortex-M as well as using a simulator."
―Craig A. Evans, University of Leeds, UK

"This book fills a void in the computer science literature."
―Don Evans, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, USA

"This text retains the ease of using the ARM7TDMI while moving the student [or reader] into the more capable Cortex-M4. …The addition of the Cortex-M4 makes this a much stronger text."
―Ralph Tanner, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, USA

"Assembly language programming is still the best way to learn about the internals of processors and this is one of a very few books that teaches that skill for ARM processors. It covers the necessary material in a well-organized manner. Updated for newer versions of ARM processors, it adds good material on floating-point arithmetic that was missing from the first edition."
―Ronald W. Mehler, California State University, Northridge, USA

"In general, this book contains most of the content that I generally cover in my introduction to computer organization course. It contains very nice exercises at the end of each chapter, and that is a plus when generating questions to help students grasp the concepts. …I look forward to a second edition, because I plan to continue using this book."
―Rose M. Lowe, Clemson University, South Carolina, USA

Good introduction to ARM programming
By Daniel T. Sullivan
How can any programming book published in 2014 NOT mention the GNU tools? To me this book was a good, but somewhat useless introduction to ARM programming. This is mainly based on the lack of GNU tool discussion. I have not worked anywhere in the last decade or so where the GNU tools were NOT the standard.

Crime Fiction: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions), by Richard Bradford

Crime fiction has been one of the most popular genres since the 19th century, but has roots in works as varied as Sophocles, Herodotus, and Shakespeare. In this Very Short Introduction Richard Bradford explores the history of the genre, by considering the various definitions of "crime fiction" and looking at how it has developed over time. Discussing the popularity of crime fiction worldwide and its various styles; the role that gender plays within the genre; spy fiction, and legal dramas and thrillers; he explores how the crime novel was shaped by the work of British and American authors in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Highlighting the works of notorious authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, and Raymond Chandler -- to name but a few -- he considers the role of the crime novel in modern popular culture and asks whether we can, and whether we should, consider crime fiction serious "literature".

Review
the "fine dining" of literature Ruth Ginarlis, Newbooks Magazine This is a fine introduction to a genre that embraces humanity in its flaws and glories, and it should find its way onto the bookshelves of anyone who likes crime fiction, or fiction in general. Ben Macnair, Nudge.com ... this tidy little read-in-an-evening item will explain and enhance your affection for murder, open your eyes to new authors and have you reaching for the bookshelves for another fix, assured that you're right in the read afterall. Sunday Sport, Jon Wise
