A photographic journey through childhood

In no particular order, Will McBride presents to us a vision of childhood and youth, exposing its innocence, ennui, pride, exhuberance, despair and its loss. At first glance, this book may appear to be just a collection of portraits of boys in a variety of situations: some nude, some at play, some with family, some lost in their own thoughts. But in each photograph, McBride has managed to capture those emotions I listed, and more. None of the nudity is contrived nor is it exploitative. In some you can see the diffidence and anxiety in the subject, while in others you can see a nonchalance in the boy's posture exposing what? Trust in the photographer? Or the cynicism born out of some other, previous experience?
An excellent collection created by a photographer with an exceptional eye.

Nice book

This book was ok. It was not what I expected it to be and hoped for more pictures and more in depth study of the subjects. It was a wide generalized pictoral/essay. I dont think I would buy the book again. The front cover was very nice but not much else in it.

Not exactly what I expected

I ordered this book at Amazon's recommendation, I suppose the recommendation was based in the fact that I've bought lots of books on photography in the past and that I have bought several gay-themed novels and movies.

So my thinking was that this was a book, while maybe not instructional in nature, at least containing several good examples of capturing the young male form on film.

Some of the photos are very well done and interesting (like the one on the cover and the matador and his family).

As others have said, the photos of Indian boys are somewhat out of place, as you are flipping through the book you tend to think "did I miss something here? Is this the beginning of another book?"

One other thing that bugs me is this; While this book does certainly fall in the category of art and the images are artistic in nature I'll just say that if investigator's found this book at Michael Jackson's house they would cheer and exclaim "case closed!" .. there are far too many photos of naked, pre-pubescent boys in the book for my liking ... that's not what I bought it for. What does a naked 5 year old have to do with "Coming Of Age"?.

About the Author
Murat Erder is a Director at Deutsche Bank, and is currently working in Data Engineering group as part of the Chief Data Office. Prior to his current role, Murat was the Domain Architect for Reference Data. Before this role he led the Integration Services group at Deutsche Bank responsible for all managed services that dealt with integration; including core messaging, file transfer, ETL, Enterprise Service Bus, Workflow and Document Management. Murat also setup the Technology Standards group at Deutsche Bank and governed adoption of new technologies. Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Murat worked for 13 years for management consulting organizations, including KPMG/BearingPoint and Deloitte providing architecture and technology strategy advice to leading Financial Services organizations. Murat started his career as a software developer in Silicon Valley and was employed as a Software Development Lifecycle and Object Oriented Analysis and Design specialist by Objectory and Rational. Murat has a MS degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Massachusetts

Pierre Pureur is Vice President and Chief Enterprise Architect for Travelers. In his role, Pierre leads the Enterprise Architecture group that includes Application Platform Architecture, Information Architecture, Infrastructure Architecture, Performance Architecture and Security Architecture. Prior to his current role, Pierre was the Vice President of Architecture for Personal Insurance Business Technology at Travelers. Prior to joining Travelers, Pierre worked for a number of Financial Services and Consulting Organizations, including KPMG/Bearing Point, Citicorp, Bear Stearns, MetLife, Prudential, EXL, Republic National Bank of New York and People’s United Financial. During his career Pierre’s responsibilities have encompassed all phases of large-scale application development and technology rollout including strategic planning, architecture, design, development and deployment. Pierre has expertise in designing and implementing Service Based Architectures and Business Process Management solutions, and in enhancing processes related to application management, including design and development methodologies. Pierre is very familiar with continuous improvement approaches such as Six Sigma, CMM, ITIL and ATAM based techniques. Pierre is a graduate of the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Mines (St Etienne, France), a member of the IEEE Computer Society and resides in Glastonbury, CT.

Timely look at Architecture in today's world

This is a timely book that looks at Software Architecture in the light of the move many companies are making to Agile development. It's a wide-ranging work that examines everything from what we mean by software architecture to what personality traits make a good architect to which tools and methodologies can help architects working with agile teams.
The authors contend that as software development moves to agile processes and cloud based environments with a focus on continuous deployment, architecture needs to evolve as well. Their solution is Continuous Architecture that follows six principles:
1. Architect Products, not just solutions to projects.
2. Focus on Quality Attributes, not on functional requirements.
3. Delay design decisions until they are absolutely necessary.
4. Architect for change - leverage the power of small.
5. Architect for build, test, and deploy.
6. Model the organization after the design of the system.
The book looks at all phases in which an architect needs to be involved. It starts with a look at gathering requirements including Quality Attribute requirements, then moves on to how to evolve the architecture through the use of prioritization tools and a look at how Architecture and Agile go together. Next the authors look at Continuous Delivery and offer advice on how good design can lead to applications that are easy to quickly build, test, and deploy. Then they look at Validating the Architecture, how that can be done and what tools can help with it. Afterwards is a case study to show examples of the ideas they've presented. And later there are chapters on Enterprise Architecture and one I found particularly interesting on the Role of the Architect and what kind of person makes a good architect.
And everything is presented in a spirit of helping the development teams build applications. This is not about theory, it's about getting work done.

About the Author
Simha R. Magal, Ph.D. is Professor of Management (MIS) and Director, ERP initiative, in the Seidman College of Business, Grand Valley State University, Michigan.� He received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.� His primary research interests include e-business and enterprise systems.� His articles have appeared in such publications as MIS Quarterly, Journal of MIS, and Information and Management, among others.� He is Editor of AISWorld Net� aisworld.org and has served on the editorial boards of several journals.� He served as co-chair of the inaugural conference of the Midwest Association for Information Systems (MWAIS) in 2006 and as the president of MWAIS during 2008-2009.

Jeffrey Word, Ph.D., is vice president of product strategy at SAP AG. He is responsible for defining SAP's future product strategy and for fostering product innovation within SAP. Dr. Word has worked for several Global 1000 companies in the high-tech industry for nearly 20 years, specializing in business and IT strategy. At SAP, he has driven the evolution of the company's enterprise technology strategy, with a special focus on corporate process improvement initiatives and services-based IT architecture design. Dr. Word earned his Ph.D. in information systems at Manchester Business School in England.

Learn ERP by focusing on underlying processes

This book does an excellent job presenting how companies can effectively use ERP by focusing on common business processes: procurement, production, and fulfillment. The books makes a clear and succinct presentation of how functional areas of an organization interact through triggers created by various types of documents within these processes. Not only are these documents discussed, but facsimiles of document 'hard copies' are presented so that readers can see the paper equivalents of documents that are increasingly electronic only. Because of the clarity of the presentation, regardless of one's background knowledge of business processes, the material is easy to understand yet not written in a way that would seem simplistic to a knowledgeable reader.

When used as a textbook, the book has a number of very positive features. The chapters are short, so students don't get overwhelmed with content. The document illustrations mentioned previously are very well done. Key terms are highlighted and well defined in the text. Supporting stories and examples are used, but not to excess. I have found the book better than books that are much longer because of its focus on keeping things simple. Students like the book as well, which is rare for most textbooks.

For classes where students are introduced to ERP for the first time (particularly SAP ERP), I believe this is the best book on the market at this time. For professionals and others unfamiliar with ERP but wanting to get a sense of what it is, how it works, and what its benefit is to an organization, this book is well worth the read and a fraction of the cost you'd pay for other books.

Excellent ERP SAP Book

Magal and Word have written a unique book about integrated business processes that combines reading with hands-on practice. The on-line exercises from WileyPLUS complement the book and offer a way to practice the concepts presented in their book. Although the book supports SAP it is a good starting point to understanding the basic concepts of any integrated system and the possible process improvements that can be achieved.

learnning the tremolo Harp

I recently took up the tremolo harmonica and was looking for easy songs to play that would sound good on a tremolo. I was use to the single
holes on the diatonic so hitting 2 holes on a slide was tricky. There are songs in this book with notes close togather and that's really helping
me get it on these longer slides. Now the songs I've done are blowing in the wind, when the saints go marching in and silent night. There are
a couple other songs Ill be trying that look like they may sound good on a tremolo. All the songs are in the key of C.

THE CASEBOOK

For the fifth edition, we developed the Introduction to Materials Management Casebook, authored by Arnold, Chapman, and Lloyd M. Clive. The casebook takes the student beyond the textbook problems by presenting a situation followed by related analysis questions. Most text chapters have cases associated with them, as noted in the table that follows the Table of Contents, and some cases bridge several chapters. Cases vary in level of difficulty, with the more challenging cases requiring students to think about the management issues involved in their decisions on the job. Reviewers noted that the casebook has added overall rigor to this text.

APPROACH AND ORGANIZATION

Materials management means different things to different people. In this textbook, materials management includes all activities in the flow of materials from the supplier to the consumer. Such activities include physical supply, operations planning and control, and physical distribution. Other terms sometimes used are business logistics and supply chain management. Often, the emphasis in business logistics is on transportation and distribution systems with little concern for what occurs in the factory. While some chapters in this text are devoted to transportation and distribution, emphasis is placed on operations planning and control.

Distribution and operations are managed by planning and controlling the flow of materials through them and by using the system's resources to achieve a desired customer service level. These activities are the responsibility of materials management and affect every department in a manufacturing business. If the materials management system is not well designed and operated, the distribution and manufacturing system will be less effective and more costly. Anyone working in manufacturing or distribution should have a good basic understanding of the factors influencing materials flow. This text aims to provide that understanding.

APICS—The Educational Society for Resource Management defines the body of knowledge, concepts, and vocabulary used in production and inventory control. Establishing standard knowledge, concepts, and vocabulary is essential both for developing an understanding of production and inventory control and for making clear communication possible. Where applicable, the definitions and concepts in this text subscribe to APICS vocabulary and concepts.

The first six chapters of Introduction to Materials Management cover the basics of production planning and control. Chapter 7 discusses important factors in purchasing; Chapter 8 covers forecasting. Chapters 9, 10, and 11 look at the fundamentals of inventory management. Chapter 12 discusses physical inventory and warehouse management, and Chapter 13 examines the elements of distribution systems, including transportation, packaging, and material handling. Chapter 14 covers factors influencing product and process design. Chapter 15 looks at the philosophy and environment of Just-in-Time manufacturing and explains how operations planning and control systems relate to Just-in-Time. Chapter 16 examines the elements of total quality management.

It worked for passing the first CPIM test.

I bought this because it is a suggested study item for passing the first exam in the CPIM series of exams. I passed the first exam using this book and the APICS exam manual. I should say that my score was barely passing but I studied for 12 hours the night before the exam while I was at a campsite. So I attribute my lackluster performance to my own study habits and not to the books I purchased. It worked for its intended purpose and I wouldnt have passed without it.

I bought this book as a reference to study for my APICS Basics of Supply Chain Exam. It was spot-on. The book reads relatively easily and can be completed in 1-3 days depending on your reading speed.

A good cover-to-cover read would adequately prepare someone to take the APICS BSC exam.

Life aboard a cold war boomer

I too was stationed on the Casimir Pulaski though not at the same time as the author. I found Mr. Jaskoviak to be very knowledgeable about life aboard the Pulaski and really enjoyed the book. More than that, the book is an important read for all Americans because the sailors that manned those boats really helped to end the Cold War in our favor and helped to avert a nuclear armageddon. The contribution to our freedom and safety that those sailors made must never be forgotten and this book will help future generations to never forget them.

Life Aboard the Crazy Polack? If you're looking for a book about submarine life, very little is written here. Much written of family history and 1960's social changes.

Apparently self-published, it is significantly better written than "Tales From Da Bronx Submariner," but editing was little more than spellcheck. There are numerous technical inaccuracies that I attribute to the time lapse of the author's memory. A review by another submariner may have revealed that there was only one LiBr, that Pulaski was depth restricted during the time frame of this work (not made Sub-Safe until subsequent overhaul thus never reached the depths written), and clear up confusion between Norwich & Norwalk as well as the geography of Charleston Harbor. There are many many more, but you get the idea.

Nit picking? Yeah, but I paralleled the writer's experience on sister ship Von Steuben (SSBN 632) during this time, leaving Rota & the shipyard overhaul in Groton a few months ahead. I subsequently served on Pulaski in the 1980s.

Interesting Read - Great Book!

As a fan of contemporary and military history, I am always looking for something new and different to read. This book is both. It's a first-person narrative that combines history and personal recollections to tell a very unique story. The author takes us through a tale of family highs and lows, youth, and military service during the Cold War. What makes this book particularly interesting is the author's participation in the often overlooked and underappreciated U.S. Navy's "Silent Service."

So, I definitely liked the first half of the book which is an interview between Ayoade and Ayoade and I couldn't put it down. The second half was good, but the first half is worth the price alone. I love watching Richard Ayoade in doing just about anything and he doesn't fail to make me laugh in this. Very worth the imported purchase.

If you like Richard Ayoade, the odds are that you'll like this book. If you are not familiar with him, this probably shouldn't be your first exposure.

I really like Richard Ayoade's sense of humor, and this book was definitely funny. It definitely is not a way to get to know him, however, as the history presented by Ayoade is almost entirely false (though therein lies a lot of the humor).

The main drawback of the book is that it gets a little repetitive. His strange and often warped representation of himself get a bit tiresome after a while.
