In this commentary Tremper Longman III addresses this question by taking a canonical-Christocentric approach to the meaning of Ecclesiastes.

Longman first provides an extensive introduction to Ecclesiastes, exploring such background matters as authorship, language, genre, structure, literary style, and the book's theological message. He argues that the author of Ecclesiastes is not Solomon, as has been traditionally thought, but a writer who adopts a Solomonic persona. In the verse-by-verse commentary that follows, Longman helps clarify the confusing, sometimes contradictory message of Ecclesiastes by showing that the book should be divided into three sections -- a prologue (1:1-11), Qohelet's autobiographical speech (1:12-12:7), and an epilogue (12:8-14) -- and that the frame narrative provided by prologue and epilogue is the key to understanding the message of the book as a whole.

THE work on Ecclesiastes

I just finished a Bible class on Ecclesiastes and this was an indispensable source. This is in the NICOT series (New International Commentary on the Old Testament) - a quality series published by Eerdmans.
This is one of the few commentaries that you could from cover to cover.

Longman is not dogmatic concerning various interpretations of some of the more difficult passages (which add up to more than I assumed). Longman is also very conversant with many of the "standard scholars" on Ecclesiastes - Blenkinsopp, Crenshaw, Fox, Ginsberg, and Whybray. This is an added benefit to this book because he frequently includes their views and provides pros and cons for each and then presents his personal opinion.

Longman does not see Solomon as the author but that hardly changes the message of the book (nor can anyone prove without question that Solomon is the author).

For the class I had also picked up Provan's work on Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon in the NIVAC series (The NIV Application Commentary). I was in the habit of reading through Longman first and felt as if Provan added little.

If you need an aid for Ecclesiastes, go with Longman. He is brilliant and his strength is Old Testament Poetry.

Interesting Take on a Little-Known Book of the Bible

Longman in this commentary on Ecclesiastes attempts to give a different perspective on the book of Ecclesiastes. Instead of trying to figure out who the author is, Longman understands the book as dialogues of two different people. The narrator is using a speech from the wise-man Qoheleth to teach something. Instead of complete instruction, Longman understands the bulk of the book to be a wise man's struggle with a broken, unfair world and a seemingly distant God. I found Longman's understanding to be very stretching, but not outside of the realm of possibility. Whether or not you agree with Longman's thesis or conclusions, I think this commentary is beneficial for the study of Ecclesiastes. For those who disagree with him, Longman challenges some common and traditional understandings. For those who are open to his understanding, Longman's hypothesis sheds an interesting light on this piece of wisdom literature.

A couple reviewers have disingenuously slammed this commentary and its author. That is unfortunate. Longman is a scholar, a skilled writer, and most importantly a follower of Christ. For those who claim Longman has a low view of Scripture (reviewer Jeffrey W. Brannen states that "He adopts a very pessimistic view of Ecclesiastes" which lead me to believe he did not really read the commentary) or that he is unorthodox (reviewer William A. Mullins, you may want to look up "orthodoxy" in a dictionary, because your flippant use of this word is completely inappropriate). CUSTOMERS PLEASE AVOID THESE TWO REVIEWS MENTIONED ABOVE - THEY ARE UNEDUCATED AND UNHELPFUL.

A great example of what a exergetical commentary should be

I was quite pleased by Tremper Longman's treatment of this often missunderstood text. He spends a good deal of time introducing the genere of the book so we can better understand the type of lit. that is falls in, and from there he takes you on a verse through verse journey of what "qohelet" (the author of the book) has to say to the everyman. Also as a side note his footnotes on this volume can lead you into some exciting research of your own. I recomend this volume to anyone that is serious about understanding the wisdom lit. of the Bible better

Nice patterns, some not very free-spirit-ish

This was a really cute, fun book. Really nice designs, lots of orange and blue and brown and gold, solid bases with strips of simple fair isle patterns worked into the edges or the middle, or simple lace worked down the back of an otherwise solid sleeve. I love the southwest, and the patterns were reminiscent of the places they were named after. I really liked all the patterns, except one really awful random sweater that I don’t think anyone with any friends would wear in public. Some of them really represented the landmark or location they were named after, but others just looked free-spirit-ish because of the other clothing the models were wearing.

Most of the patterns are worked size 5-7 needles, with some smaller stuff thrown in there too. Each pattern has several photographs and charts. The sweaters have drawings of the composition. It is mostly sweaters, a few wraps and shawls, a hat, a pair of socks, a scarf, and a cowl. Recommended for intermediate knitters who have their hearts set on Nevada and Wyoming’s autumn nights.

An inspiration, filled with patterns I want to knit!

Free Spirit Knits is a beautiful collection of southwest, high desert inspired knits. The designs are colorful, textural, and presented against a stunning outdoor landscape. Included are a number of cardigans, several pullovers suitable for men or unisex, shawls in several sizes, and some smaller projects like a hat, two cowls, a pair of socks, and scarf.

While many of the designs incorporate multiple colors, various techniques are used from simply knitting stripes, to slip stitch, to stranded colorwork. The first two techniques are suitable for any level knitter. The stranded designs which require you to carry 2 colors for each row can be a little bit intimidating, but the cowls would be great projects for someone who is new to this technique since they are knit in the round and don't require a precise fit.

I have knit a number of Anne's designs in the past and have already knit 3 patterns from this book. Her patterns are clearly written and easy to follow.

this book is fabulous - not only eye candy with the expert photography but also a delight to your imagination.
there are too many designs that tempt me to knit - i.e. the aspen sweater, tres flores shawl, santa fe wrap, Chaco canyon shawl, monument valley sweater and the pottery shard jacket.

what makes the book absolutely perfect is that I am well acquainted with this designer's skill in writing her patterns - they are flawless.

Many books are out which speak to the psychological condition that has come to be called codependence - this book is about the Spiritual wound that caused the psychological condition. It's purpose is to remind old souls of who they are, and why they are here in human body on this planet at this time. All old souls are now doing accelerated Karmic settlement in this New Age. Our mission to integrate Spirituality into our interactions. It is easy to feel Spiritual in relationship with nature. It is relating to other humans that is messy. That is because we learned how to do life and relationships in childhood. Through healing our childhood wounds we can learn to connect Spiritually and also, in the process, heal the planet. It is possible to feel the feelings without being the victim of them, or victimizing others with them. It is possible to change the way we think so that our mind is no longer our worst enemy. It is possible to become empowered to have choices in life at the same time we are letting go of trying to control life. Life can be an exciting, enjoyable adventure when we wake up to Spiritual Truth and integrate it into our day to day life so that we can stop reacting out of our childhood emotional wounds and dysfunctional attitudes!

(From Authors Foreword to the book) When I first came into contact with the word "Codependent" over a decade ago, I did not think that the word had anything to do with me personally. At that time I heard the word used only in reference to someone who was involved with an Alcoholic - and since I was a Recovering Alcoholic, I obviously could not be Codependent. I paid only slightly more attention to the Adult Children of Alcoholics Syndrome, not because it applied to me personally - I was not from an Alcoholic family - but because many people whom I knew obviously fit the symptoms of that syndrome. It never occurred to me to wonder if the Adult Child Syndrome and Codependence were related. As my Recovery from Alcoholism progressed, however, I began to realize that just being clean and sober was not enough. I started to look for some other answers. By that time the conception of the Adult Child Syndrome had expanded beyond just pertaining to Alcoholic families. I started to realize that, although my family of origin had not been Alcoholic, it had indeed been dysfunctional. I had gone to work in the Alcoholism Recovery field by this time and was confronted daily with the symptoms of Codependence and Adult Child Syndrome. I recognized that the definition of Codependence was also expanding. As I continued my personal Recovery, and continued to be involved in helping others with their Recovery, I was constantly looking for new information. In reading the latest books and attending workshops, I could see a pattern emerging in the expansion of the terms "Codependent" and "Adult Child." I realized that these terms were describing the same phenomenon. I was troubled, however, by the fact that every book I read, and every expert with whom I came into contact defined "Codependence" differently. I began to try to discover, for my own personal benefit, one all-encompassing definition. This search led me to examine the phenomenon in an increasingly larger context. I began to look at the dysfunctional nature of society, and then expanded farther into looking at other societies. And finally to the human condition itself. The result of that examination is this book: Codependence / The Dance of Wounded Souls, A Cosmic Perspective on Codependence and the Human Condition.

This book is based upon a talk that I have been giving for the last few years. I have edited and reorganized, expanded, added, and clarified information in adapting the talk to book form, but there is still the flavor and style of a talk throughout much of this book. I have not attempted to change this for several reasons, the main reason being that it works in conveying the multi-leveled message that I wish to communicate. One of the reasons for the human dilemma, for the confusion that humans have felt about the meaning and purpose of life, is that more than one level of reality comes into play in the experience of being human. Trying to apply the Truth of one level to the experience of another has caused humans to become very confused and twisted in our perspective of the human experience. It is kind of like the difference between playing the one-dimensional chess that we are familiar with, and the three-dimensional chess played by the characters of Star Trek - they are two completely different games. That is the human dilemma - we have been playing the game with the wrong set of rules. With rules that do not work. With rules that are dysfunctional. I was terrified beyond description the first time I gave this talk in June of 1991. It seemed as if emotional memories of what it felt like to be stoned to death by an angry mob were assaulting my being. I went ahead with it anyway, because it is what I needed to do for myself. I needed to stand up in public and own my Truth. I needed to own the Truth that I had come to believe in, the Truth that worked for me to allow me to find some happiness, peace, and Joy in my life. I found that other people found Joy and peace in my message also. So now I share this message with you, the reader of this book, in the hopes that it will help you to remember the Truth of who you are, and why you are here. This information is not meant to be absolute or the final word - it is meant as an alternative perspective for you to consider. A Cosmic Perspective that just might help to make life an easier, more enjoyable experience for you.

About the Author
Known as a "practical mystic," James Ray grew up the son of a minister, immersed in traditional Christian religion. He later expanded his studies to include a multitude of other spiritual traditions and has been initiated into three shamanic orders from the Incan culture and the supernatural Huna tradition of ancient Hawaii.

Great book if you need a kick in the pants

This book reminds me of the old days when I was devouring everything written by Carlos Castaneda. The difference is that Mr. Ray doesn't talk about the actual experiences he's had with his spiritual teachers -- rather, he tells you a few things about how you should (and shouldn't) live your life.

While I have no problem with the principles Mr. Ray is teaching (I am somewhat familiar with most of it already), I cannot help being turned off by his writing style. I feel that Mr. Ray shows an emormous contempt for the lifestyle of the average person. He uses words like "whimp" and "wet paper bag" rather frequently. I find this arrogant and snotty.

Sure, it is easy to get negative feelings when you notice how some people live, but a person at an advanced level of spiritual achievment ought to have gone beyond such negativity.

Also he talks about how people and relationships are "dispensable". My spontaneous thought when I read this is: "This guy obviously never has had children!" If he'd had the experience of caring for a baby of his own, he wouldn't be able to talk so flippantly about others being "dispensable".

He talks a lot about how he fights his Ego -- and I cannot help but think: "Seems like the Ego is fighting itself".

If you want to read a very different book about spirituality, I strongly recommend "The Power of Now" -- also I urge you to read "Soul on Fire": Soul on Fire: A Transformational Journey from Priest to Shaman by Peter Calhoun. The latter book takes a shamanic approach to spirituality, but unlike Mr. Rays' book it is devoid of arrogance and doesn't talk down to you. (I hope Mr. Ray will forgive me for recommending a competitor!)

This book gives a general overview of spiritual principles but could have included detailed information as to how they work, why they work and more importantly, specific methods of applying them to the reader's life in a practical way. If you are looking for a mere introduction then you will like this book, but if you want real details (that is, a more "HOW TO", hands-on,life-altering approach to spirituality) I suggest the following books: YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE by Louise Hay,THE POWER IS WITHIN YOU by Louise Hay, MANIFEST YOUR DESTINY by Wayne Dyer and THE DIRECT PATH by Andrew Harvey (read in that order)as a good place to start. The techniques offered in the DIRECT PATH will keep you busy for years. The Metta technique described in that book is very effective. Peace and love!

29 Practical Tips for Living a More Spiritual & Powerful Life

I first learned about James Ray a year before his association with The Secret book and Law of Attraction principles. I knew he had been on Larry King and was known as a Life Coach who talked about prosperity and the law of attraction. I also became aware that he was into spirituality and considered himself a practical mystic. After I wrote my own book on the Law of Attraction in 2007, Beyond the Secret: Spiritual Power and the Law of Attraction, I was interested to see that this book by James Ray included the words Spiritual Power in his sub-title. So, I purchased this book curious to learn more about him and his views.

First, I got the book at Barnes & Nobel (sorry Amazon) and paid the full price of $24.95. Considering the thin size of the book I was a bit shocked at the price. It is only 140 pages long and books that go for that price are usually 250 - 300 or more pages in length! But, I wanted to see what he said, so I purchased it anyway. (By the way, Amazon.com is cheaper and to be honest I would have felt best if I had bought it here as a used or "like new" book for a lot less money).

Price aside, I was pleased with the content. The book is outlined as a series of 29 tips with a three to four pages of recommendations about each tip. Tips from the Table of Contents include: Transcend the Ego, Less is More, Be Unique, Just Be, Find Comfort in Discomfort, and so on. What I liked best about these tips was how congruent they were with what I also consider to be a practial approach to spirituality. Ray's advice is full of wisdom and insight that can only be ascertained by someone who is attempting to actually live a spiritual life. It let me know that Ray is someone who is walking the walk and not just talking the talk. This gives what he writes a level of authenticity which for a savvy reader like me is a requirement (and is useful for those who may not have read a lot of spiritual books).

And, I truly believe that anyone who follows the advice Ray gives in this book will experience a more meaningful and powerful life based on an ability to stand on your own in life as an authentic, dynamic, and powerful human being in a truly spiritual way. On a totally different note, it also left me wondering about Ray's affiliation with the popular The Secret book. I say this because as this book by Ray reveals, he seems in alignment with principles that go way beyond the hype and materialistic view that was the main presentation of The Secret. Hey, I understand, it was a hugely successful book and anyone who was included in it got a marketing boost. It's just I believe you will discover what James Ray is really all about by reading this book, which is much more in alignment with the teachings in my own book, Beyond the Secret, which states that the "real secret" in life has nothing to do with the law of attraction, which can be used in a selfish, or selfless way. The "real secret" has to do with what kind of person you become while you are here. Practical Spirituality and James Ray give you that kind of guidance. It was a pleasure to learn more about him. And a gift to read this powerful and rewarding book.

David Edwin Harrell Jr. is Daniel F. Breeden Eminent Scholar Emeritus at Auburn University. One of our leading scholars of American religious history, he is also the author of The Churches of Christ in the Twentieth Century and coauthor of Unto a Good Lan

Edwin S. Gaustad (1923–2011) was Professor Emeritus of History and Religious Studies at the University of California, Riverside. He also taught at Shorter College, the University of Redlands, Baylor University, and Auburn University. He received a B.A. from Baylor University and a M.A. and a Ph.D. from Brown University. He is the author of, among other works, Sworn on the Altar of God: A Religious Biography of Thomas Jefferson, Liberty of Conscience: Roger Williams in America, Historical Atlas of Religion in America, The Religious History of America: The Heart of the American Story from Colonial Times to Today (with Leigh Schmidt), and Proclaim Liberty Throughout the Land: A History of Church and State in America."

Green has never been sexier!

Patrick Fillion--the "Stan Lee of gay comics"--finally gives us one of his most sexiest creations his own comic book title, and deservedly so. Locus--who's made appearances in other Class Comics titles--gets his own full length story here. And like with any Fillion project, the wait is long; but the payoff is more than worth it!
Blending sci-fi adventure with gay erotica, our hero--who's the embodiment of what it would be like to have sex with the most alluring, well-built alien in the cosmos--is on the run from Sektan Authorities after refusing to give in to Sektan Laws. Thus hiding away on another planet, Locus tumbles from one perilous plot to another as he's first gang-raped (authorities "rescue" him at the last moment), has a tryst with a closeted commanding officer, and then, in a horror-themed but tantalizing climax, is sentenced to die before a cave filled with life-sucking creatures.
Intertwined with the plot are Locus' flashbacks to things past: His discovery & love of the equally provocative Camillicat & other comic book adventures.
Fillion's artwork is vibrantly crisp & colorful, and the writing is clever & engaging, with some nice twists.

More violent than I expected or enjoy.Other than the story line the comic has great color and drawings. I did not get the idea that it was this type and degree of violence from reading about it before I purchased it. I shall return,exchange or sell it.
