Moses, Prince of Egypt

Many of us don't realize the gift that many "older" authors have to offer, especially in today's `I want it now!' society. Case in point - Dorothy Clarke Wilson, author of "Moses, the Prince of Egypt" as well as numerous other historically-based fiction works, many of which occur during biblical times. Nearly everyone has heard the story of Moses, whether you've read about him in the Bible, or through the movies, made notable by Charles Heston and Yul Brynner.
Dorothy Clarke Wilson published her book about Moses in 1949, so many of today's generation have not had the opportunity to read her books. However, since her book was re-released in 2012, and is available on Kindle I was fortunate enough to find it. While the style of writing in Dorothy Clarke Wilson's Moses, the Prince of Egypt is not particularly what readers are used to today (extremely in-depth detail, narrative, and wordy prose), her ability to blend action, dialogue and prose together has successfully created an easy-to-read and fast-paced adventure story.
In her book, Moses is more than the big, strong, handsome man depicted by Heston in the movie. In Wilson's book, Moses has become human, fallible, and, believe it or not, does make a few mistakes and errors in judgment. Wilson's rich use of imagery and sensory language literally transports the reader back in time, to the point you can smell the very dust of the desert, and the brackish odor erupting from the Nile.
Wilson took some fictional liberties with her rendering of Moses and his story, but today's readers will certainly enjoy her imagination and her ability to create a three-dimensional character out of a two-dimensional rendering as we find in history books or biblical writings.
I was pleasantly surprised by Wilson's abilities, and will enjoy looking for her other books, as they're a nice change of pace from many of today's literary offerings.

I previously purchased “Jezebel – The Wicket Woman of the Bible” by Dorothy, loved it… and this book is no less… here’s my take on this book:
Dorothy Clarke Wilson takes readers through ancient biblical times to bring Moses and Egyptian rulers to life in the story of Moses: The Prince of Egypt. While many readers know the compelling story of Moses and his upbringing as told in the Bible or learning about him during Sunday school lessons, Wilson uses her captivating storytelling and historical knowledge of the ancient times to create a fun and educational read for people of all ages. The novel was also a primary source for the Hollywood blockbuster, The Ten Commandments, which goes to show the entertainment factor in this historic novel.
Moses: The Prince of Egypt, traces the life and times of Moses from the time he was found floating down the Nile River to his rise through Egyptian royalty. Later, Moses witnesses an Egyptian overseer beating a slave and he kills the overseer. After fleeing from the Egyptian palace, Moses is catapulted into a leadership role of the Hebrews and takes them across the desert out of Egypt. Moses, looking to God for guidance, is chosen to receive the ten commandments in order to relay back to the Hebrews in search of a new land.
Dorothy Clarke Wilson spent many years researching biblical times and her in-depth knowledge transports readers alongside Moses as he goes through his amazing life experiences. While much of the content is pure fiction, as we only have minimal historical and Biblical references to refer to in regard to his life, Wilson has certainly managed to bring his times to readers today, literally pulling you in to the time, the place and the story.

Moses the Man

I watch "The Ten Commandments" every year. This year I took note of the books the movie was based on and decided to read this one. I found it fascinating and well written. It mainly deals with Moses living as a Prince of Egypt and then his time away once he discovers he is a Hebrew. Very little of the book deals with his return to Egypt and the exodus. The author portrays Moses as a man very confused and disillusioned by religion and god)s) in general and he wrestled with these feelings through most of the book. He is intrigued by former Pharoah Akenaton, considered a heretic for believing and trying to change the religion of Egypt to monotheism. Anyone interested in Egyptian or Jewish history would enjoy this book.
